I agree Bill. I guess the end result is the same but the surrounding circumstances are usually completely different!

I'm with Matt. I think that playing the same songs night after night would have to get pretty old after awhile, especially when you're as good a picker as Kenny. A change of scenery and a change of pace would probably be very welcome after 7 years with the same group
Man, I couldn't say it better myself.....It's torture!!!!!!!!!!![]()

We should just consider ourselves lucky to have had Kenny come out of semi-retirement for as many years as he did with the Rage, and remind us what straight ahead driving banjo is all about.
Prior to Kenny, I too remember Steve Sutton and especially Tom Adams holding down the banjo spot in the Rage with class & style. Rhonda's made changes like this all her career, so this is just part of her prerogative as band leader.
Let's hope that a) Kenny finds at least a semi-steady paycheck coming in soon, and b) we still get to hear that Williams banjo played the way only Kenny can.

I wouldn't insist so much on the "problem" of doing the same songs over and over, night after night. It's what all professional musicians do, and the great ones like Kenny always manage to put something fresh and inventive here and there, and show the listener that they are not bored. Also, with the heavy output of CDs that RV had in the past few years, I don't think the odds of actually playing the very same songs night after night are very high. Getting burned out may be easy for younger player who come to success kind of overnight, but not so much for consummate professional performers like Kenny, IMO.

Hey Silvio: Hope all is well in Italy. I agree totally with you. Playing the same songs nite after nite would drive anybody CRAZY!!! I don't see how Sonny did it for 50 years without totally losing his mind. Also agree with the Nashville sound, I had the chance to talk with Kenny 3 different times and he is just a regular guy like us except he is a monster on the banjo. I know he will land on his feet regardless of what ever reason he is leaving. Maybe him and Darrell will pick up a couple of great singers and start their own outfit. I'll be sure to be listening!! This is just my $1.35 cents worth. (don't know what the conversion chart is on money now) hahahaha!

Yeah I hope that Darrell and Kenny will do something themselves, that's my two favorites from the group. Getting a fresh new start is always a little scary for everyone but I have been listening to Kenny more and more over the last year and I love the straight forward, "old school" banjo picking he does, love it!
For the guy to be such an "average joe" and get on the hangout with us, even have had him in the chatroom and picking a little bit for us, well that just shows the character of the man, great guy.
I wish him the best and I hope he starts a thread on here letting his friends / fans know what his next project is, who knows, he might be in need of a break big time! ![]()

I agree with Silvio about the stuff Kenny cut with Flatt. It was great music. I also like the Jimmy Martin recordings Kenny played on too. He is a great banjo player who has never got the credit he deserves. He'll always be right up there with Earl, J.D., Sonny, and Bill Emerson as far as I'm concerned. Just my $1.35 worth (as Terry M.says).

Yada, yada, the fact is Big K can take a break from the road, as good as a hot break on a banjo! His choice to take some time away to be sure- let us show the man some love &
the respect he deserves. As for R. Vincent , she is a class act all the way. I am sure she cherishes her time with the legendary Kenny Ingram- my best to both. Thanks to both for the fantastic bluegrass music that they have blessed us with together. "Roll on big K"........

Aaron McDarris on banjo dont know about guitar. Wouldnt you hate to be in his shoes with every banjo picker watching you for any tiny bobble to compare your picking to Kenny but Kenny didnt play a lot of his hardest very best stuff that he is capable of doing that he done with Lester Flatt and Jimmy Martin all of the great up the neck backup. In my opinion the ones who have only heard Kenny play with Rhonda have never heard him at his best. Her style of music just doesnt require the very best he is capable of. Will be a hard job to fill his shoes.

Yep, and you can hear every note he plays as he can drive the sound right to the mic, no matter how far from it he is. However, if you want to hear what "drive" means on slower numbers, check out the Folkways - Smithsonian website and get a copy of the "China Grove, my hometown" CD by The Nashville Grass: Kenny is at his best there, IMO.

Arthur, I appreciate what you said, even though I left one name off that list of players and hope you'll agree with this. I forgot Allen Shelton. You said a lot when you made the point about not playing fancy and fast. It's about playing what fits the song you're playing at the time.
Derek, thanks for the compliment, but I think I'll keep my old day job, at least for another 10 years. You all have a nice day.

I saw The Rage earlier this year. I drove a couple of hours to do so, the show was in lazyarcher's hometown and I visited with him prior to the show, but didn't talk about it too much afterward as I had to get on the road home. While we were not seated together, we both had great seats. I went because of Kenny and I wasn't disappointed. But I agree with Dave, I found myself wanting to hear more of Kenny. But, I guess we have to keep in mind that it is Rhonda Vincent and The Rage, she is the headliner and the rest of the band is there to support her. They all did a great job of it.
What I will say is that Kenny is one of the nicest people that I have ever met. I am as glad that I had a chance to speak with him as to hear him pick.
Maybe Kenny will start a band of his own where he can really cut loose. I would sure support it.

Kenny sounds great in this video.
I was noticing that Rhonda isn't playing any chords. Just muting the strings and chopping. It seems to work.

There was no lip-sync done on this video. This is exacty the way it was recorded with nothing added. The single mic setup was all we were using back then in early 2004. If you can do it this way, it gets mixed on stage by the band and not the sound man. ![]()

I saw Kenny this past weekend in Springfield , IL. I saw him first in June, 1977 in Bean Blossom, IN with Lester Flatt. Other than to say hello on several occasions when our two groups would be working together, I never talked with Kenny very much. His playing spoke volumes to me. I've worked with some of the best in the business, and have been around, and became close friends with many of the great players in this business. There is, in my opinion, only a small handfull of players that can be called the best. Names like Earl, Don, Sonny, J.D., head that list. Kenny Ingram, to me has a place there too. He simply, does it right. No shortcuts. He has been one of the most inspiring players to me, and I hope all the best, for one of the best, Kenny Ingram.

Here is some vintage Kenny:

Also on the single microphone set-up back in 2004, looks like that was an Audio Technica 4033. One of the original ones that kinda started the "single mic." revolution! I'm glad to say that I finally got one of those 4033's for our hobby band. Now if I just could get those banjo sounds into the mic like Kenny!
Kenny, please keep us Hangout folks abreast of your next move.

It seems like every time you turn around, members of Rhonda's group are leaving. This also includes Michael Cleveland and many others before the latest to leave, Darrell and Kenny. To me, it doesn't seem like she has had a band of all the same musicians for more than 3 years (some individual musicians of the Rage have been there longer). It seems that she has had more turnover than any other bluegrass band currently touring and/or recording.
Why is this the case?
