Rhonda does a lot of touring....and I mean a lot.

They also do a cruise or two each tear.

I would not want to be on the road away from home as much as that.

To me, it doesn't seem like she has had a band of all the same musicians for more than 3 years (some individual musicians of the Rage have been there longer). It seems that she has had more turnover than any other bluegrass band currently touring and/or recording.

Why is this the case?

I have a two word comment to your post: Doyle Lawson. Doyle has had a far greater turnover than Rhonda. His entire group is different than it was two years ago. Doyle even jokes about how his band is the farm system for bluegrass. Notice that a lot of folks have left Rhonda to start their own groups (Michael Cleveland, Audie Blaylock, Josh Williams, etc.).

I certainly don't think it is any sort of indication that either Doyle or Rhonda are bad bosses, or hard people to work with; both are probably very structured in what they expect, so that might get old pretty quickly. If they were too difficult to work with, they would have a very difficult time getting folks to work with them in the first place. I think it's just the nature of bluegrass musicians to want to do something different after awhile. Some want to tour more, some less. I can't even name a top touring group that hasn't had some member turnover in the last couple of years.

From the Rhonda Vincent Web Site:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hunter Berry will begin his 8th year as a member of the Rage on 1/1/09.
Mickey Harris will begin his cumulative 8th year membership as well.

Kenny was there 7 years, and Josh Willams 4 years.

8 years x 2 members = Hunter & Micky
7 years x Kenny,
4 years x Josh.........

Looks like a stable gig to me

Man that Kentucky Borderline footage is great! I love that driving banjo sound and Kenny has set the mark for it. Good luck in your next venture. MJ

Here's my report on meeting Kenny Ingram at the Rhonda Vincent & the Rage performance at the Wickenburg, Arizona Blegrass Festival and the evening concert that followed yesterday.
I introduced myself to Kenny after their afternoon set at the festival. It was a great experience meeting him, and seeing his prototype Burlile- powered namesake and my S/N 001 production banjo side by side.

Kenny graciously agreed to play and sign the resonator of 001 that evening at the concert. He took me back stage before the show and played 001 and then his banjo. I've never heard two banjos so close in sound. Kenny's banjo was a bit sharper due to a little tighter head, but boy were they close.

I believe that such consistency is one of the many advantages of a custom made banjo made of the finest quality parts. In my opinion, Jim Burlile's manufacturing process of individually casting rings using only virgin metals can't be beat. Of course the Arthur Hatfield neck, Jimmy Cox rim, Gill resonator, and Will Williams superb work finishing, fitting, assembling and setting up the finshed banjo are exceptional as well.

Rhonda and the Rage's evening concert suffered from a number of instrument problems (not the Williams), broken string, etc. which resulted in a hectic and uneven performance, but those things happen and it was very enjoyable. My time with Kenny made it an unforgettable day.

I found other BHO members descriptions to be spot on. Kenny is a very warm and friendly individual. He told me that he had five more shows to perform with the Rage. Let's hope that he doesn't retire again. Thanks Kenny!

One reason for the turnover in touring bluegrass bands is that the genre (possible exception in part--Alison Krause) never makes the big bucks that can keep a top rock band, e.g., together.

I didn't say that there weren't any, just that I couldn't name them.

A related question I hope, what did Big K do between playing for Flatt, Sechler, Spears, etc. in the various Nashville Grass bands, and when he re-appeared on the scene in a big way with Rhonda? I lost track of him there for quite a while. have always liked how he can drive it, and how he holds the banjo, like a weapon.

There was an article on Kenny in BNL a while back, he got out of the business for about twenty years. Sure glad that he got back in.

Kenny, I hope that you'll start your own band... We out here are your biggest fans and want to hear your pikin for many years to come. That goes for your Williams banjo too.

Kenny was a regular working stiff like a lot of us for those years. Occasionally you would see him out around Nashville playing with Chris and Dixie Bozung or Harley Allen, but he was just letting all that talent fester, I guess. Kenny, if you are reading this, I sure hope you find the right group to show off your picking. Get a website and put out a CD. We'll all do our part to support you.
