"Hey Steve, for the non finished neck...do nothing. It will outlive us all without failure. I would suggest, if you must, to simply apply a very light coating of Johnson's wax. VERY LIGHT. Really better with nothing.
Still playing and sounding good?? No problems?

Sonny,
I just this minute got in from playing out with the Chief at a private party. This was 35's first venture in front of the public.
I know the look on my face as I heard the Chief in the monitors had to be like Barney Fyfe's in the episode of Andy Griffith when they cut his mic in the chorus so the good baritone could sing from behind a curtain!
I kept thinking " That tone is coming from me ?"
What a wonderful , full sound !
It plays like its on auto-pilot.
Some day you have to tell me why its so easy to play.
I hate that I'll be out of town for a few days and have to leave it home .
Sonny ,this banjo is hoss !
Thanks again.

Diva i'm not sure Spartansburg would have the same alure in my kids eyes.... My 15 yr old son is too busy taking in all the teenage girls here with little swatches of material for bathing suits while my two younger daughters are trying to convince me its ok for them to wear swimsuits like that <sigh>
Of course the upside of it all is that I can sit on the beach and catch up on BHO with my iPhone...... The scenery isn't too bad from a 50 yr old's perspective either .......

Hi all,
Just home from NashCamp Bluegrass Week - played my blonde Chief all week. It sounds soooooo good. I passed it around alot and the students loved it.
The fall banjo camp is sold out at this time. There is a waiting list, and often we have cancellations. So, let me know if you would like to be on the list. However, we DO have space available in Bill Evan's banjo class July 27-August 1. Come on down!

Chief,
At Nashcamp, will Charlie or Frank be available for tweaking of setups? I've a little D-string buzz coming from the tailpiece that I want to have looked at. I've also got a little belt wear on my resonator that I would like to have looked at. Can Charlie or Frank take care of something like that at the camp?
Looking forward to October!

Try a piece of self stick felt under the tailpiece cover if you haven;t already.

John,
Haven't tried that, but I do have a piece of self-stick foam under the cover that is about 1/4" thick. I think it helps, but I still get a little buzz. A new tail piece may be needed. Need someone that knows what to look for to provide an opinion.

Yep, the back of Sonny's granada is pretty well worn, but it's still one beauty!!!!! If that banjo could only talk (bet Sonny's glad it can't haha). Tim, Sonny's right, don't worry about the belt stuff. It give's the banjo some character. And beside's, if the banjo sound's good, don't go messing with it. I won't let anyone touch the finish on my old flathead, or my chief!!!!!

Sonny's Granada is one of the coolest looking banjos ever. That banjo has enough mojo that it could probably play itself if it wanted too. I tell you another banjo that has some character aside from the fact that all the metal is new, is Wade Mainer's old banjo. The grain pattern on the resonator is absolutely stunning. I wish you could find maple that had the really tight smaller curls like the ones on those old Granada resonators.

Reid...to my knowledge there is not a pill yet that will teach you the banjo..there's a remedy (or easier way out) for almost anything else tho.
You want to play better, understand the instrument, learn how and what to listen for, and practice as much as you can...whether it be 1 or 14 hours per day...there is nothing to take it's place..remember... a show or performance of any kind is nothing more than a continuation of practice. Banjo playing is like anything else, if you work hard enough, you can have it.
Luca...I tried to tole you. (Luca is in Italy. He bought one of my banjos several years ago then sold it for some inferior thing...LOL)

The Grascals are doing the Tuesday Opry July 8...can be heard on the net or WSM AM radio. Listen if you can...show starts around 6:30 or so. Talked with Aaron McDarris yesterday..man, they are busy. 4-5 days a week, every week...reminds me of another group I was associated with from the late 60's to mid 80's. WHEW!!

When I lived at home, I used to come in from work at 11 or twelve at night. My parents worked early in the morning so I couldn't practice in the house. After a long night at work with licks in my head that I was dying to learn, whether in the summer or the dead of winter, I would get in my truck, back it down the driveway and drive up the road a little way to get away from waking everyone up and sit there in the truck trying to learn every lick and nuance of Foggy Mountain Banjo. I think I saw the sun come up a couple times.
Sonny I broke out the "When the Roses Bloom In Dixieland" album the other day, what a gem. Anyway, what does "When I Swim The Golden River Mean?"

Hey Luca,
I don't have any idea where your cerebellum was the day you sold your chief.
I am sure glad that it was not functioning properly that day though.
Chief # 66 is being well cared for and that is forever. I was very lucky to fall into this perticular Chief due to the fact that it was a transition model and the Chief used it for a while himself to be sure the Blaylock tone chamber would be the way to go. So,don't worry Luca, # 66 is in good hands.

Hey Greg!
I'm getting closer to that 10 pounds than you know. If I want to see the front of the fingerboard now I have to really stretch my neck. Funny how as the middle gets bigger, the neck gets shorter. Guess I can just rig up some kind of mirror on the peghead instead of my tuner. Wouldn't that look stupid! Probably should take Sonny's advice and get a different belt. I always try to move my buckle around when playing on stage so the buckle doesn't scratch the resonator. However, it must be still getting it a little. It's not that bad. I was looking at Wade's banjo on Elderly's site and his resonator is really scratched up.
