John...I was hoping Todd would answer as to the condition of that banjo...if he says it right, it's right. I'm pretty sure he got it after Number 77, so no, it does not have a Huber ring. It would be The Blaylock.
Good luck in finding it.

John:

Here is where the banjo is for sale or trade: http://www.banjohangout.org/classif...asp?cid=6432. It is a very fine banjo - it is in great shape. I don't have any interest in Ray's sale or trade of the banjo other than I think great banjos should get in the hands of motivated pickers. It has a gold Blaylock tonering and nickel hardware. The gold on the tonering darker than when it started out. I learned they call this patina - it has a proper gold patina.

And I should say this about dealing with Sonny Osborne - buying a new one directly from him is a real treat. He gives you the straight scoop. I remember buying this banjo (brand new) from him a few years back and he sent me an e-mail that asked me to check the armrest because he wasn't perfectly pleased with this little streak on the armrest when he shipped it to me. Well, I couldn't see anything amiss but I got a package from Russell Springs, Kentucky one day later from "F. Neat" and it had a new armrest in there in case I could find the little streak. That armrest sits on a bookshelf at my place. I never found the streak. Great banjo - if someone doesn't buy it I may just buy it back from Ray.

Regards.
Todd

Thank you Todd...there's only one way to do it, the right way...the way I'd like someone to do me id I were on the other end.
Now, if we could only get car dealers to...OH, never mind...it'll never happen!

I think I'll call Ray and just buy the thing from him!!!!

I own Chief #59. I have changed the Huber ring to a Blaylock and it is a really a great banjo. I have gotten many compliments on that banjo. I requested some info from Sonny a couple of days ago on using the Drum Dial to set the head tension on my Chief and my 39 RB-75. I received a prompt reply from him and set them up to his specs and they have never sounded better. He was extremely helpfull to me even though I had purchased the Chief used from someone else. He and his banjo's are first class! Jim Millsapps

Just wanted to let y'all here on the Chief thread know of my maple that's for sale:

http://www.banjohangout.org/classif...asp?cid=6409

I had the maple first and loved it so much that it made me want to seek out a mahogany Chief also. I got my mahogany from Sonny at IBMA last year and I have bonded so well with that instrument that I can't put it down! And the maple is way too good a banjo to just sit. . .

Banjoman69, I was a founding member of the KG. I was lucky to have gotten to play music with such a talented group of guys. Except for a few years in the early 80's I played banjo with the group until we quit playing in the 90's. Thanks for remembering. Jim

Okay, Sonny. . . you can't call 'em "Sonny's ugly tuners" anymore. Take a look at the ones on this unit:

Sonny still can claim Ugly Tuners. The ones on that banjo are technically " Crummy Ugly Tuners ".
I almost sure that is the correct term.

Jim, I followed and have all the albums of Knoxville Grass, some super picking- at that time I thought you were J.D. made over-- I took from Bill Chambers who always spoke highly of you--was even at a concert around 77-78 where you broke a string at the end of your break, went away from the mic, grabbed a pack out of your back pocket, changed that string in time to walk up and take the final break- I was amazed at how fast you changed it and tuned-- I wasn't the only one amazed by that as everyone was really showing their approval by the warm show of hands.. - I live in Madisonville and only some 40 miles away was easy to take in Buddys barbecue when you guys were playing.. so sad about Glen though-- glad to see you are still a part of the banjo community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sonny, Do you (or for that matter, anyone else) know of anybody that has replaced the original Blaylock ring in their Chief with one of Bill's new Bear Tracks rings, and what were their thoughts, comments, opinions, etc. in comparison between the two rings? I'm thinking about trying one.

And Todd, I was wondering about that little streak on the armrest near the tailpiece. Thanks for the info.

TheChief - Posted - 08/21/2008:  08:06:07

Ray...No, I don't know of anyone who has changed them out.
My opinion is; When you have the tone you want..which is what you have with the present Blaylock, why change to basically the same thing. Make them, Bill Blaylock, tell you the difference in the two rings.
In the old days, when you bought a Gibson or Vega...you had the same everything except appearance. Cosmetics if you will.
Bill Blaylock has one of the two best tone rings in the business right now, why change it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm all about tone and sound...I didn't tinker once I had it right. Some do, some don't.

I had never actually had my hands on an Osborne Chief untill just recently. I went to look at one that I heard was for sale and told myself the only way I was going to buy it was if it was a big difference in tone between it & the other banjos I own. Needless to say I brought it home. I love the sound & the way it plays. Now I know what all the fuss is about!!!! Hum? I wonder what a Mahoghany Chief would sound like?

He ordered the banjo last week and it will be ready to ship Monday if all goes well.
Bill is one of the top players ever..and beside that, one of the best men I've ever had the privilege to know and call friend.

Wow!
Bill Emerson is one of the best , cleanest , most recognizable pickers ever for sure. His tone is so clear it jumps off of recordings old and new .
Theme Time has become such a staple for me .
I just hope # 36 isnt better than #35 .He doesnt need the help : )
FYI, # 35 is doing fine , getting worked like a pack mule .People definitely like the sound of it .
Sonny, Did you bet Bill 20$...? Probably not . He cant get much better and remain human .

You've got enough professional firepower to make your own Chief CD like the Huber and Stelling folks did. Could be pretty cool!

TheChief - Posted - 08/25/2008:  10:07:47

The biggest difference is in the material used to build each..I use the best material in the world and have the best craftsmen in the world building them.. The Scout is made in China, it's a middle of the line banjo..not a beginner, not a toy, but a serious mid range banjo. The Chief is a top of the line instrument. A lifetime investment if one chooses.

Stan, maybe I could have all you guys on it. It would take a year to play.
Seriously, I hadn't given it much thought, but I guess that could be a possibility.

We haven't mentioned Jim Milsaps..a Knoxville player of note..probably one of the best in the area.. Larry Mathis is among that group too...they both have Chief banjos. I'm proud of that. Jim Smith too, but he doesn't play the banjo...he's a mandolin player..he still should have a Chief.

Keep digging.

Dana Cupp has a Dannick in his Chief and there is one in Japan. Both are well pleased. Comparing a Blaylock to Dannick...it's all according to what you want out of your banjo I guess.
Both are fine tone rings..probably the finest on the market.
