If you take possesion of a new Chief by the end of June , 2008 Sonny thows in a set of Ugly Tuners free . There is still time to take advantage of this great offer. Steve. . . welcome to the club of happy Chief owners! I have been playing Mahogany #18 hard and heavy ever since I got it from Sonny at IBMA last October. . . it sounded amazing the night I got it and has been steadily improving, but for some reason it seems like it has jumped up a whole notch just in the last week or so! Sometimes I stop playing, hold it out at arm's length, look at it, and just quietly mutter expletives to myself.

Chief, I have Osborne Bros. recordings as parts of various compilations, but I don't yet have an OB cd. A few months ago I asked for some suggestions on the HO as to which would be the best one to get first. I got so many different responses that I still haven't ordered one yet. From your point of view, which one would you suggest I get first? (and yes, I'll get all the others eventually).

Diva I think it all depends on what you're looking for. If you want old bluegrass you would likely go for "Bluegrass Collection" on CMH. Released in 1978. "When The Roses Bloom in Dixieland" is another good Bluegrass album. It's on Pinecastle. If you prefer a more country flavor, "From Rocky Top To Muddy Bottom" might fit better. It's on CMH. A religious theme would include "Singing Shouting Praises" on Sugar hill. Then there are the two Bear Family box sets which covers everything we recorded from 1956 to 1974...on MGM, Decca and MCA (Which is the same as Decca)
That squirrel looked like, and as a matter of fact I thought it was, Little Roy Lewis. Also looks like one of the fellows I tend to feed in my back yard.
If I may be of any further help let me know.

TheChief - Posted - 06/24/2008: 11:42:10
Correction Tony...That is not a bootleg album. It was recorded illegally (without a written release and/or without our knowledge) at a live show in Germany, then sold to Tom Riggs. Tom released it on his Pinecastle record label, which we were affiliated with at the time, making it a legitimate recording. I'm adamant about this because Mastering engineer John Eberle and I worked on this for nearly 2 years to come up with the finished product. I'm really proud of it now, in it's present state...and I believe Tom Riggs has recouped his initial investment. A bootleg product is one in which a person takes a song or a complete album already released on a record label, and re-releases it on another label without permission from the original artist or label. That's serious business, and unfortunately done every day.
Please don't take offense, none was intended.

Sonny, I apologize, bootleg was a poor choice of words. I love the real life feel and setting, it is like you are right there watching. I remember you talking about the work that you did trying to get all of it as good as possible. It is really awesome, I have always been a big fan of your playing and always impressed with your harmony singing. The shows from Germany really show both very well. Thanks for you do for the BHO and bluegrass community. Tony

Diva
Lest ye forget where I grew up, it's Southern California, home to some of the meanest, biggest rattlesnakes one can shake a stick at. Snakes there are so numbered in spring there are rattlesnake warnings posted at schools, golf courses, and the local news shows routinely warn their viewers to watch out for the snakes each spring. For years I had a snake catcher in the garage for those moments when one would come visiting. And in Arizona, I lived in the Mohave desert, home to one of the deadliest snakes in the world, the Mohave Green. Ssssssssssssssnakes! And Diva, Sonny couldn't introduce me to my first rattlesnake even if I wanted him to do that. I divorced it back in the 70's. Hahahahaaaa Oh, as far as the Chief you mention, well, Missie, I don't plan on letting that one go until I'm old, maybe. I may have it buried with me when I die, just in case it turns out one of the bonuses in Heaven is being able to pick a banjo. I'll have a great one with me already. I'm sitting in Texas right now. I actually miss Tennessee. Spike2 Proud owner of Greg Rich engraved, Bean Blossom neck, walnut Chief #1 Age and Treachery will Always Triumph over Youth and Ability

Diva,
I had dinner about a month ago with Sonny. And I would love to see him step out of a UPS truck. For those of you that haven't got to meet him personallly......well, there just isn't a better man (other than my Dad) out there. And to think that he ride's a bicycle 8 mile's a day. And we are NOT talking about a stationary bike. So...if any of you are driving around Hendersonville, TN and see a man on a bicycle.....don't run over him. It might be The Chief.
It is such a pleasure to know such a great person. Not only did Sonny inspire me about playing the banjo....but he's also an inspiration concerning life. I've learned so much from him. I could never repay him for what he's taught me. He is defintely one of my true hero's.

He alway's has some great storie's, and also great advice. Not only about playing banjo, but about life in general. He's just a few year's older than I am, so I know I can learn from him. Ha. Seriously, I hope that when I get to his age, I have just 1/10th of the wisdom he does.
