Andy Wachter, perhaps the worlds best plectrum play, and Bernie Leddin, formerly of the Eagles were there. I got to talk to Andy for about an hour, and Bernie most all day from time to time, and for those of you who don't know...Bernie is the guy who got the Eagles to record Midnight Flyer...written by Paul Craft and published by Rocky Top Music...a company owned by my Brother and I. That album is somewhere near 25 blue gillion (however many that is) by now.
Thank you Lord.

Sonny, it was good to see you at the banjothon Saturday. I didn't stay all day because of the headache that I just couldn't shake, but it appeared that everyone had a great time. Hope to be over that way and pay a visit before Nashcamp, but if not then hopefully I'll see you there. Darrell Atkins

Hey Sonny....I heard Smokey Mountain Smoke the other day on Sirius Radio. I've never heard that song before but I loved it. I assume it was Bobby that was singing on that cut and it was absolutely captivating. A rather simple song but his voice was that of an angel. I replayed it prolly 10 times and couldn't get over the soundof his voice on that cut. Y'all were definitely at the top of your game that day.

Sonny,
Great Honor and pleasure meeting you at Banjothon. Amazing event. Took many pictures of your Granada, great!! 362 days until next year
Best Regards,
George Seymour
PS: Good thing you didn't have my voice! We wouldn't have heard some of the best singing ever recorded!

George, with your voice I would have made one heck of a radio guy though.
Banjothon was/is a special time and place where we can all gather and share stories, and put faces on names. If my health holds I'll be there again next year.

Smokey Mountain Smoke..."Don't let Smokey Mountain Smoke get in your eyes!"
Brother Bobby? No one came remotely close to matching his voice. In my opinion of course, there were three people in that group....Bill Monroe, Ira Louvin, and Bobby. None could be duplicated, the reason for their success.

Banjothon 2009 was the best one for me so far. The highlight without a doubt was getting to play Sonny's RB-3 and Granada. . . and Sonny pointing out a couple of notes I was missing in "My Cabin in Caroline" and "Farewell Blues". On "Farewell Blues", I was being especially dense and couldn't figure out what he was talking about. . . until he finally reached out and took hold of my left hand and put my finger on the right fret. I could have gone home right then because nothing the rest of the day could top that, or even come close.
Thanks, Sonny.

Greg,
I know what you mean man. I HAD to play a little bit of Dandylion and When the Grass Grows Over Me on 9584-2. It was a real treat for me getting to play some of the Chief's stuff for him on his banjo, and him saying, "Where did you learn that?"

Sonny,
I forgot to ask you about the holes drilled in the peghead of the Granada. When did you have that done? I don't remember that in any of the pictures I've seen of it or when I played it at Cherokee several years ago. I would like to comment as well on the neck as that has to be the prettiest piece of curly maple I've ever seen with those tight grains.

TheChief - Posted - 01/14/2009: 12:04:43
Those are Frank Neat necks on both. I won't take the chance on breaking them so 20 years ago I asked Frank to build a neck for each of them that would be exactly as the old ones. He did.
I had the holes drilled for an experiment that did not work. The original necks do not have holes.
Greg...it only takes a little to make it perfect. If you listen really close, I'll bet you find it to be right...if not, I apologize!
Thanks for all the compliments...9584-2 and 182-3 both thank you all.

Then Sonny said with a big grin....don't worry Gary...its only $600,000 !! I'm just glad he didn't send me a bill for that chair I broke at his house last year ! Good to see you again Sonny !

Guess I have to come back again . Is there a camp award for perfect attendance ? I used to get those in Sunday school . Steve

I think Darrell Atkins has been to them as well...? And of course Bill,Sonny , Ned , Cindy... Steve

yeah but we sure miss hearing you play your granada, or at least i do anyway. i had quit playing for about 10 years when i met you down at jekyl island in 99 and after we met and talked and you got such a kick out of watching me playing upside down, it kinda helped me decide to go back to playing again. i had not had it out of the closet in many years when we met down there, since then i have been at it almost every day and now playing in 2 bands, bought a pre war, and found a new wife and stepson all because i went back to pickin again. so i guess i need to say thanks. thanks for your music and your friendship. your one of a kind ole boy thats for sure, and we're all better off that you shared your talent and insight on the banjo down through the years. thats enough rambling i guess.

Yes, I have been to all of them as well.. It is just a community thing with one thing in common.. and from that you come away with lots of friends and a great time! Can't say enough good things about Sonny and Cindy not to mention Bill and all of those that make this one of the best camps I have ever attended, hence the repeat every year.. Heck, I have already sent my registration in with the check to be sure I get included this year... Hope you have too Steve... and now Steve is a Chiefster too

Gary - a favorite story of mine I think was told here on the Hangout of a little 12 or 13 year old boy wanting to play Sonny's Granada ( a number of years ago when the going price was a measly $25,000) at a festival. Sonny handed it to him and told him "well you are young enough spend the rest of your life paying for it if you break it". Only Sonny would have thought of that!

Hey Chief, I caught a few glimpses of you and Bobby on one of the "Country Family Reunion" shows last week. I have my DVR set to record them all, so I'm not sure when it actually came on. Seems like I remember them saying that the shows were actually taped back around 2001 or 2003? So far, they haven't let you two sing or play, but I keep watching and hoping they will.
I'll bet those shows were a blast. I've really enjoyed watching them; there are a lot of great stars from the past on there, too many of which are no longer with us.

The Opry reunion shows were probably the most enjoyable part of this business I've experienced..or at least one of... I wish I could remember when they were filmed but without going back through records I just cant. They are available on DVD now. A gentleman, Larry Black, was responsible for doing all that and that will most likely go down in history as one of the most important projects ever attempted, and completed, just as he envisioned. It was great fun for us all and I'm thankful to have been a small part of it.

Well, don't feel like you are the outsider! This music came from Scotland at least partly! A lot of your relatives are probably around here.
Learn at least one new tune each week. Try Bill Monroe''s instrumentals.

Just wanted to say Sonny, that my father in law is a great fan of yours and the Osbornd Bros., and one of the highlights of his life was when I brought him to meet you in McAllester Oklahoma at the festival there right before I picked up my Chief back in 1999. He was so impressed that you actually knew me by name. He still talks about that to this day!!
Thanks Sonny!

Just took Cheif #75 to my first jam on Saturday and here is a quote from the jam's blog site from the dobro player:
"You missed out on... meeting Aaron w/ a very loud banjo. I think he has an amp hidden in there. Amazing what quality materials and workmanship can do to amplify the sound and improve upon it."
I wish he would have said, "what a great banjo player", but... you get the credit Sonny!!!
