Doug,

What The Chief says is absolutely correct. Althought there wasn't a choice of tone rings when I bought mine (and honestly, how would I know the difference?) I did want some custom abalone inlay work done and it was done to my specifications (for a small fee, but one I was willing to pay). There were even pictures sent during the process to show me the progress. You even choose the bridge you want, the spacing of the bridge, anything else, it will get done. The experience was great. Sonny was great to work with. And when my Chief arrived at my home after my last deployment, well, it was like Christmas in April! A great product and a great experience all around.

I just confirmed..we got Kristin for next year. The winning banjo player of the year, and I think the first female to win that award. My goodness, she can play.
So far, this was the best one...in my humble opinion I might add. Everyone seemed to have a great time and I believe they all went home having learned something about the banjo and/or how to play it.
Charlie Cushman gave a wonderful insight into Don Reno and his style, how it differed from Earl. JD was JD and you all hung on every word he said.
And, the jams I attended were outa sight.
Thank you all for coming...Thank you so very much. I look forward to a healthy year for all of us, and perhaps we'll be able to meet here again in 2009.

I also thought Kristin was a great teacher last year and will look forward to her teaching next year. Here is what strikes me about these weekend world aways :
Folks, it isnt supposed to be this easy.
We know a small slice of each other , taken from a shared fondness of music , reduced further to a connection with Bluegrass and reduced again by focusing on such a strange instrument - the banjo.
We walk around with big grins on our faces and cannot wait to engage in giddy conversations about cases, string guage, wood, listen to great music and then answer a dinner bell in a fashion much more polite than we ever did in high school.
Sometimes the smiles are so big I think I have wandered into a scene from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"...the one where the good stuff has kicked in. *
The goodbyes are not " Good meeting " business lunch handshakes or Hollywood air kisses.
People hug , some get weepy, hand shakes are firm , not crushing , but really felt.
We meet for a few days and show our best .Some of us may be despicable in other settings , I am pretty sure I can ring that bell,but not here .
Man , it feels good surrounded by this kind of single minded gladness and it lasts a long time.
I think it all flows from the top.

I think this was one of the best Nashcamp's ever !! I'll add my thanks to Cindy, S. Bill and everyone involved in making it happen as well. And hat's off to the campers - Steve is right, what a terrific bunch of folks to be able to spend a weekend with !!

JD was great and I'm sorry I didn't get to be a part of the Charlie Cushman classes. My thingy here in Philly went well on Sunday but I made everyone swear not to pick a '09 date until the Nashcamp Schedule comes out

Rick - no luck on the phone but I left Phila my number in case they found it while cleaning up. No doubt it'll turn up in some remote place like you know who's hotel key card(s) did....

You have a way with words. II cannot express the feelings I have after camp. So many memories, so many friendships that have developed over years of sharing music...it's really special. And...the laughs! Who has the photo of Kathy and Sonny in the "chapel". OMG...I'm still laughing over that one!

All of you on banjohangout...we took a photo of every NashCamper who is on this list. So, you will be able to put faces with hangout names. Thank you KC for this great idea! Coming soon.

We also have a photo of Chief owners. I think Kerri (birthday girl) took that one.

just got home. we went from nashcamp-colombus sunday, and from there home today. 2650 miles, hanging with the nashcampers definitely priceless!

Hello everyone! I'm busily packing, getting ready to leave for England on Tuesday (Hey Sonny, is there a souvenir that I can get you over in Liverpool? I'm playing there on Friday night).

Some of my most cherished memories will be of watching you guys jam on Saturday night - that was really unforgettable. I haven't seen such joy in music making in a very long time.

I also haven't heard so much laughter in one place in quite a while - I guess since last year's banjo camp. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this such a memorable event - for all of us.

Thanks to everyone. I had a great time. What could be better than surrounding yourself with a nice group of people who share the same passion for banjo. Corey and Stan, sorry I didn't get a chance to say "goodbye", but my ride to the airport was leaving. Thanks to Chip for giving a stranger a ride to the retreat and to Alan for giving me a ride to the airport. Good job Cindy, Bill, Sonny, Ned, Alan, JD, Charlie.

Sonny, seriously, you need to write a book about your life and experiences. Not only would it be informative but humorous as well. Listening to your stories was a "hoot". I'm growing tired of reading about Bill Monroe. There's lots of books out there about the man, but nothing about you, JD, Earl, etc. Really get crackin on that book.

Finally, thanks to the folks who run the place where we had our retreat. They did a great job of making me feel at home. By the way, I don't know about you folks in the South, but we Yankees tend to serve spaghetti with forks and not our hands, but hey, seems like a good idea!

At the risk of sounding very much like a "newby" and very ingorant as I've never been to a camp. I've heard alot on BHO about different banjo camps. Since I've never attended one, what's the goal (for lack of a better word)? Is it Social, or is there very real " OMGosh, that's how you do that " kind of stuff. I guess one question is what are the take-aways and what does $650 buy you that that same amount of money spent in private lessons with a great instructor wouldn't buy you? PLEASE don't get me wrong, I'd love to meet Sonny and JD as I'm in awe of their abilities. It would seem a bit overwelming and intimidating as we all know how it feels to be in the presence of people who are just outstanding? Help me understand.

i also have to say, bruce and i loved the collective sense of humor at this camp. not sure it's because it's banjo specific, but the teachers and students are all incredibly funny people and great to be around. we're still laughing at some comments heard over the weekend.

how the heck am i supposed to go back to work tomorrow? don't you all love it, co-workers ask about what you did, and they don't know these famous banjo pickers from a hole in the ground. you get the polite nod and smile... oh well

I must say 3yrs for me now. I have met so many people. The relationship that we all have is hard to put into words. ( But ) if there is a newbie this year out there maybe the could feel you in. I'm still on a cloud! as well. my first year was 2006. and I never felt like a new person. I never thought about money $650. The relationship I have now will last a life time. I will be there in 2009 you can bet the house on it. I love them all. Mike

There are many different camps at different price points. NashCamp is at the high end because the lodging, food, and instruction is at the high end compared to some other camps. This was my third year, I had a blast (again), learned some new stuff, got reenergized for playing, taught some banjo before and during the camp, and got to pick with a lot of people who've become *dear* friends -- priceless.

But, I had two highlight moments during NashCamp this year.

I was lucky enough to be lodged in the building where the Chief was staying and on Sunday morning i was in the living room picking quietly and Sonny was in the kitchen getting something to drink. I had just finished "John Henry" and Sonny leaned in as said "You played that one *just* right." -- priceless.

The second happened at lunchtime on Saturday. I was picking in the upper dining room and Sonny and JD came up to find a quiet place to eat their lunch and chat. I basically ended up with a 30-40 minute private two-on-one lesson on backup and the importance of learning the neck from two of the masters of the 5-string banjo -- priceless.

Now, these things didn't happen to everyone, but I'm sure all the campers came away having had a good time. If I had spent that same $650 on lessons, I would have gotten more hours of private instruction but I would have missed out on so many other things that make NashCamp so special.

I guess what I'm trying to say is NashCamp (and some of the other camps) can't properly be analyzed by taking the cost and figuring the opportunity cost of how many hours of lessons you're "missing". There are some things that happen at banjo camp that can't happen at your local banjo teacher -- like learning JDs break for "You don't know my mind" from JD Crowe himself. Updated with some new, super-cool licks -- priceless.

I would recommend you save up your money and call Cindy on January 2nd and reserve a spot in next years camp. Actually, don't call her till January 3rd -- let me get my reservation in first.

I'll let you in on a secret .That was from a closing argument I gave in a rather grisly murder case years ago.
I merely replaced words like "sling blade", "Cheese Whiz " and " baloney animals with toothpick legs " with words like "banjo" "strings " and "wood".
Worked out OK with a few minor adjustments to tense.

I know Robbin has a picture of the loving couple in the wedding chapel! It will appear here shortly after she gets home! She and Kathy extended their stay, took in Nashville's highlights and the Grand Ole Opry and tonight they are up at the Hatfield's jamming and sampling some good old possum that Beverly has cooked up for them. I know that jam session in their room went well past 2:30 in the morning because my phone rang here at home (3:30 ET) to listen in to the pickin' and laughing! Robbin can't say enough about what an absolutely phenomenal time she had with all! She'll be back next year for sure and I may drag my bass down there to help Kelly out!
