I always liked the break on "Gal You've Got A Job To Do" especially that las tag lick, very 60's sounding, cool stuff.

I just put some new pictures up on the website. Bill Emerson (Chief in hand) and with three of his students.

Hey Brandon, that was 60's...no wonder it "60's sounding." Comprendez-vous?? :)>

I used a Vega Vox 5 string tuned all the way down to E...I believe...wait, my memory has failed me..that was "The Kind Of Woman I Got." "Gal You've Got A Job To Do" was a Fender banjo. That was recorded at the time when I had the RB3 repaired by Robby Robinson (deceased) and I borrowed his banjo whilst the work was being done. The leg bolt had pulled out of the heel of the neck.

Sonny I have probably said it before but the licks on Tennessee Stud are about the best I have heard. The mix on that tune is perfect and I guess it's the feel or something I don't know but it makes me .

Sonny,

Which version of the Merriam -Webster's dictionary did you use to find that word?? LOL :)> The thing I always liked about your picking especially around that time was that to me most of the music that came from the 60's was cheesy sounding but you always had a way of playing some of those "telecaster" and "electric" type licks with a really awesome sense of taste. It's like when I hear you do that stuff the only thing I can say, is "WOW" and rewind it back and listen again. Btw the tag lick on "Gal You Got A Job To Do" sounded very Jerry Reedish to me as well as the ending on "The Kind OF Woman I Got"

Hope you are well.

Brandon..twas the Frainch version..that's pronounced..F-RAIN-CH!!!

I told Jerry he shouldn't use those licks...it would make him sound like a dirty old banjo player.

That is a great picture of Bill Emerson on the Chief site. Looking forward to meeting him at banjo camp and hearing that Chief up close .His picking always seems to leap off of records. It isnt the loudness its the clean playing-just exact to my ears.
I am peaking to soon. Banjo camp is still a ways off .Normally I pace myself better than this.

Anyone heard, or have, the old, old, Carl Smith Bluegrass album. Quite good. Carl, Curly Chalker, Pig, Grady Martin, Tommy Jackson, Ray Edenton...Bobby and I...I forget the bass player and perhaps a drummer was on the session. Probably Bob Moore on bass and Willie Ackerman on drums.

I was wondering. Sonny what Bridges come standard on your Banjos? Snuffy's Hatfeilds? And what bridge do you use mostly?

I used a 5/8 Frank Neat bridge. Maple with ebony top. I tried most others but always came back to the Neat. Silvio Ferretti makes an extremely good one. He knows about bridges, but it all comes down to what you want to hear come out of your banjo.

Thank you so much, Chief, it's an honor to hear these words from you. Matter of fact I'm sort of studying Frank's bridges to try and understand "what you want to hear come out of your banjo" . You used Snuffy's bridges, and Wadsworth's, and old Grovers, you sure know that that elusive sound is. Also, Crowe has a Neat bridge on his RB-75, and he's used pretty much the same bridges that you used through the years (including one of mine, which he told me is on one of his banjos... ), so it makes sense to me as a builder to understand what Frank is putting into his bridges. None of us is making his living building bridges anyway, so I'm sure he won't mind a little competition...

Doug,

I hope you don't mind my butting in here, since your question was directed to Sonny.

I think the banjo heads you're referring to are actually made for *Dave* Osborne in Greensboro, NC. Dave owns the Music Barn, which is a well known music store in these parts. I have one of these heads, but haven't found a good use for it yet.

I think that Dave may be a distant relative of Sonny, but I may have been misinformed.

Well, it came. It sounds amazing. I didn't think I'd ever find a banjo I liked as much as my Buck Creek. This one is making me think that I'll need to keep them both. They are different but both really nice. The Chief really sparkles. It's nice. Anyone know if I can order bridges from Frank Neat? I'm pretty used to Crowe spacing.

Thanks all!

Not Chief related, but at least Chief thread related...

Has anyone else noticed that when we roll over to a new page of posts, the new page indicator number does not appear on the main forum page until 4 or 5 posts into the new page? Not sure if it is just me or not, but it does seem to mess with finding the newest posts on the thread when that happens. Is it time for part 8?

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Heya Stan, SonnyO. I'm on my way back home to the left coast. Not CA but right next door in AZ. We've sold our home here in the TN hills and I couldn't be more elated. Ol' what's his name has me stuck so far out in the country here that I've almost forgotten how to behave. We head to AZ next week to find a home there. I keep singing, " I'm going away, I'm leaving to stay, I'm going and I ain't comin' back."

Ain't heard from your own self in a while, Sonny.

Hey folks - I just posted this official press release as a separate thread that you can find over at "Other Banjo Related Topics."

We hope to see as many of you as can possibly make it - we truly, truly feel we've created a one of a kind event that's hard to beat if you love banjos. Sonny, Cindy and I always try to make the camp better each year and I'm really looking forward to what we've got in store this October with Bill Emerson and Tom Adams mixing it up with Alan Munde, Charlie Cushman, Ned Luberecki, Frank Neat, The Chief and me. Here's all you need to know:

9th Annual NashCamp Sonny Osborne Banjo Camp

October 16-18, 2009 at Camp Marymount, Fairview, TN (near Nashville)

With Sonny Osborne, Bill Emerson, Tom Adams, Charlie Cushman, Alan Munde, Ned Luberecki, Bill Evans & Frank Neat

Be a part of the best bluegrass banjo event in the world! Join Sonny Osborne and some of the world’s greatest players for an unforgettable weekend of group instruction, concerts, jamming and FUN designed for all levels of players, from beginners with one year of playing experience to advanced pickers - and absolutely everyone in between!

Why are we the best? Our emphasis is on music, friendship, fun and great food in a beautiful country setting near Nashville at the height of the fall foliage season. We have the best teachers, the best program of instruction, the absolutely best food, and the most comfortable accommodations and, of course, SONNY OSBORNE! But most importantly, we have the most fun! Bill Emerson and Tom Adams will be at camp on Friday and Saturday and Charlie Cushman will be at camp on Sunday. The other teachers will be at camp for all three days.

Why should you be there? Camp participants are just like you. We all absolutely love the banjo and bluegrass music and we all want to help each other become better players. We welcome young folks and the young at heart, male and female, folks from the city and folks from the country. No matter what your ability level, we guarantee that you will have the time of your life and will learn more banjo than you ever imagined. By the end of the weekend, you’ll also have fifty new lifelong friends.

You’ll be grouped with players at your ability level in small group instruction and you’ll also get to play in jams (including slow jams for beginners) with some of Nashville’s best pickers helping you to sound your best. You’ll also experience a Saturday night teachers concert that you’ll remember for years to come.

Class sessions will cover Scruggs, Reno, Osborne, melodic and single-string styles, banjo set up, playing with others in bands and jams, bluegrass history, working up solos and much more. Our world-famous teachers will explain the secrets of their styles and demonstrate their most popular tunes. Banjo builder and set up expert Frank Neat will be on hand throughout the weekend to help you get your banjo sounding its best. Banjo camp begins at noon on Friday and will wrap up at about 3 p.m. on Sunday. Shuttle service is available to and from the Nashville airport.

Early registration is recommended. $650 tuition includes all activities, meals and lodging. Attendees who sleep off site are welcomed for $475. For more info, visit www.nashcamp.com, email Cindy Sinclair at nashcamp@nashcamp.com or phone 615-952-4040.

Hey Sonny,
It's been a busy time. My son, Matt came into my business as a junior partner this past year and you know what the market has been like. My little girl just graduated from Messiah College and just landed a teaching job in PA. I'll be an empty nester by the end of summer!

I've put a band together finally and we're working in a new bass player. It's going pretty well. We've got 3 and 4 part harmonies that are tight and I get to play banjo, guitar and mandolin.

I'm hoping to drive to NashCamp this year so I can bring my Kay Upright as well as my Collings guitar, "the Loar" mando and of course, "TammySwinette"

I hope Cindy stills has room. Can't Wait!

Sonny,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your question about the Scout. I left the powercord for my computer at a camp (not a music camp!) I was attending and was without the computer for several days. Now I am catching up. I love the Scout. It has a great, bright but full sound, and I like the neck. I was a little worried that it might feel a little clubby compared to the Chiefs. No problem at all. So when it comes to banjos I am one happy and lucky hombre.

In the last week I have been asked three times to put some bluegrass worship services together. Nothing in the last 8 years but 3 times in the last week. Maybe my playing has finally improved. Anyone ever done a bluegrass worship service, beyond just hymns at the appropriate places?

Kathy, I am working on the photo for my profile. Thanks for the suggestion.

I agree with the Chief, even if Tom can't play a lick on the banjo at all (I'm sure he can still manage some -- probably better than most of us), what he KNOWS about playing the banjo, arranging tunes, and backing up other instruments will indeed be priceless.
