Hi Aaron,
I live in the town named Kyoto.
To our regret, Kyoto is far away with Yokohama.
Then, I will introduce to you a great banjo player who live in Yokohama.
He supports the Japan tour of Tony Trischka in March.
He is sure to give you information of bluegrass on Yokohama.
Please wait for a while.

Many Thanks Koji. I looked at Google Earth and Kyoto is a long way from Yokohama. You can email me at apherigo@carolina.rr.com if there is someone closer to contact. I'm still debating on bringing Chief #75 on such a long flight. Its lasted through 10-15 domestic flights (once to the bahamas) but I cringe each time I open the case at baggage claim. The Calton case seems to be doing the job though.

I was playing a gig last weekend and handed Mahogany #18 to a banjo-playing friend of mine who had not seen it before. He hit a few licks on it, his eyes got big, and he looked at me and said, "Is THAT what these things sound like?!?!?".

Why YES, yes it is. . .

So, let me get this straight..."sweetness" would be in reference to Cindy??

And that has what to do with banjo playing, The Chief, Scout, Gibson protests, or Loafer's Glory???

Just joking...

And I can hear JD saying, "Yeah Right!!"

Hey Sonny, enjoy your pickin and also your posts on the HO. I recently ran across a You Tube clip taken years ago at a Berkshire Mt. festival. It featured you, Bob and Mr. Monroe doing one of my favorites, I Hear A Sweet Voice Calling. I don't think the harmony gets much better than that. To my opinion Mr. Bill could really put the power in there.

Banjo pickers like them "Sweetnessers"..they like pickiing "Siempre" for 'em....making 'em purr....purring...good for banjo pickers...most of 'em used to being cussed at...

Actually the word is "benjo". Spent a long time in Japan. "Benjo" is really not socially accepted, (considered slang or "low class").

So Japanese banjo players pronounce a banjo with "bunjo".

Maybe someone in Japan used a banjo pot for a pot and then was so relieved, the term caught on. Remember, "crap" derived from a guy in England named Thomas Crapper, who was a porcelain chamber pot and later, toilet fixture dealer.

That picture on the left really doesn't even look like Marie Osmond. I would have never guessed that it was her. She sure seems like a very nice person (on TV).

ProudChiefOwner, glad your banjo arrived safetly and in one peace. I hope you have as much fun as I am having breaking your new banjo in. I was so worried about something happening to my banjo during shipment that I decided to pick it up. I was lucky and Sonny's wife met me half way. Keep us informed how that banjo breaks in.

Man this cold sickness that's going around right now has been here and on the way somewhere else. First time I've been sick in over two years. Getting better now..slow, but somewhat better. Things are rather quiet banjo wise..I guess the economy has us all a little scare...me too.
I made a short trip to Kinston, NC.with the Grascals and tried to hear one of their shows but for the sound person, was nearly impossible..Saw some of Ronnie Reno too..same thing. Heard Kristin play some pretty agressive stuff..she can play...and, the Chief she plays sounds pretty good too.
Not to be confused with PROgressive...just good hard banjo picking..by agressive I mean she took control of the banjo while she was at the mic.
They (The Grascals) are really good.

Since we've not had a post in a while, I'll throw one out for my fellow Chief owners and players.

I just purchased a JD Crowe version of the Blue Chip thumbpick (Medium) and I really like it. There's a couple of threads talking about it, but I wanted to pass along some feedback from a Chief player. Its expensive, but high quality. Our banjos are top notch as well as our accessories (strap, capo, etc.). Why shouldn't our picks be equally as high quality. Before you knock it, try one out. Its very nice, and Charlie Cushman thinks so too.

Steve,

The picks are high-tech ceramic and are glass smooth. Very fast on the strings with virtually no pick noise. They just came out with the thumb pick. They've had guitar and mandolin picks for a little while. They have many big-name endorsers. Here's the link to their site http://www.bluechippick.net/

The picks are an ugly brown, but they sure do sound nice. As for the thumb pick, it has a nice stainless steel band that does not slip or turn on the thumb. I went with the JD Crowe version because it is a little shorter and, for me, would cut down on the pick scratching the head. I like it. I can play as fast as I possibly can and the pick just stays put. Play as hard as I want, the pick stays put. And, no pick noise.

That is in fact The Granada...9584-2...Great banjo to say the least. Gee..that must be the early 80's...my hair is basically still black and Hank Snow, Leslie Wilburn, who are both gone, and Bobby has yet to wear his trademark "hat." Wow! Wonder where they get these videos???

Are those picks from Matt in Knoxville?? Expensive, but indestructable..or so I understand.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Personally, I like to be able to destroy something every once in a while, even if by normal use.
If I felt like it , I could stomp on a thimb pick and not miss it or be too put out to replace it. I've never done that but like knowing I could .

Sonny,

From Matt's website:

"BlueChip Picks is a small company based in Knoville, TN. These picks are the result of the hard work and planning of Matthew Goinsgrouppic along with Allen Goins, Brian Phillips, Tyler Morris and Shain Hansard. From design to testing, this five man crew works to create the best possible product. BlueChip takes great pride in seeing our picks used to help create great music.

We have spent many long days and nights brainstorming and testing ways to make these great picks out of an amazingly expensive material and still sell them affordably, creating the best shapes, and perfecting the finish and bevel. To help solve those problems, we create our picks on industrial grade CNC machines in our professional machine shop. These machines and their operators work daily with extraordinarily close tolerances and we must hold our picks to the same standard.

One question we always hear, "Why are they brown and not blue?" BlueChip picks are not blue, but were named after our machine shop, Blue Chip Machining. They are, and will always be brown due to the properties of the material used to create them.

We trust you will enjoy playing with these great picks as much as we enjoy creating them."

I love mine!
