Since we've had such a rash of spammers trying to sell banjos or purchase banjos, this is a new sticky that will give you the names of those people we know/suspect of being spammers. Hopefully, this will help keep our members from being spammed.
UPDATE: We're having a slew of hacked accounts lately and a bunch of spammers coming in trying to sell bogus banjos. As we catch them, we'll lock them out and we can use all the help we can get from you members who report them.

Looking at IP and profile name. IP usually tells me where they "might be" from.
IP addresses won't catch smart ones. They can use simple VPN add ons to avoid detection. Without a change in policy, we have to rely on the diligence of the mods, who have done a great job. We all have caught on to some of the things that send up red flags. Since the scammers don't seem to know what they are, we shouldn't discuss them. But the mods know. If you see something dicey, use the report to moderator button (I think it is toward the bottom of the ad). It will remove the ad pending review. Tell the mods what you see. It's the HO version of "see something, say something."

Hopefully, by putting their names on the Swap Shop, people can check first, before they do business with a newcomer.
Thank you Sherry. The Person "Purewater" came across as very suspicious to me this morning, asking to buy a banjo I have for sale, wanted to pay with a cashiers check, I asked if he was a member, checked his profile out, only 2 days old and nothing on it. have not heard from him since I expressed suspicions.

"By accident."
Yep, the same old scam.
"His assistant."
NO real buyer will have any "assistants," "pickup agents," or "helpers" to get them what they are interested in.
A new one emailed me yesterday. Username of "senator", joined yesterday (3/29).
The dead giveaway was the completely blank profile (no photos, about info, media, etc.). Crazy how an account can be created without filling in ANY of that information, but I guess it does help immediately identify the fake ones when they pop up.

Often it's a red flag for a scammer. However, some people might be trying to see if you'll drop the price. When in doubt, check with a moderator or check this sticky to see if that person's been locked out.

I don't find any member locked or open with that name. Perhaps that's Shotit that you e-mailed me about? If so, he's locked out and thanks for the heads up. I missed it yesterday.

He tried to scam me as well. first used the zaria90 BHO account and summer.vacationrentals0479@gmail.com email. Then he switched to Mark Sheng alias and : shengmark041@gmail.com
You can add to your list: David Anders, and Donovan Wright. If a check comes from Navy Federal Credit Union. It's fraudulent. If the Priority Mail came from Tracy Carr at Manchester Packaging Co. it's fraudulent. If you enter the tracking # into the USPS web site it will not be found
