So glad to hear that my every day notice of spammers locked out is working. We don't want anyone to get scammed.

I don't find any member locked or open with that name. Perhaps that's Shotit that you e-mailed me about? If so, he's locked out and thanks for the heads up. I missed it yesterday.
I have received a very similar offer from a "Mark Sheng", email "shengmark041". I have a banjo for sale, he offered to buy it. Supposedly his assistant overpaid and wants a refund once the check has been received/deposited/cashed. I became suspicious at that point and notified "Mark Sheng" - from Lafayette, IN - that I was going to investigate via banjohangout. Sounds like the same scammer....

Definitely a spammer.
I check new members by username, not e-mail, so if you report a spammer, try to get his username. if he's not a member, we have no way of blocking/locking him.

Thanks for helping me spot these two, trying to buy a banjo for sale -
herbanjo
Glad to help. Good idea to go to the home page of the one asking questions and see how long they've been a member, if they have any friends, made/answered any threads and of course, check this thread and, as a last resort, ask a moderator, we're glad to help.

I don't know about "normal", but yes, we've had a bunch of spammers lately trying to scam members.
Before selling anything to anyone, vet them carefully. How long have they been a member? Check home page: any friends? made any posts or started any threads? Member of the Players Union? When in doubt, check this thread to see if they're locked out. Contact a mod to see if they can find out any information on the person in question.
We do our best to keep them out and thanks to our members for alerting us to those we haven't caught.
@Texasbanjo I was contacted by Royalwhite67 (who turned into Mark Sheng in the second email) about a banjo and did a forum search for that user name but there were "no results".
Eventually I found this thread by searching "Sheng" but why didn't this thread come up in the search results for Royalwhite67 when it's clearly part of the discussion?

Royalwhite67 was locked out yesterday when I came back from lunch. Evidently had joined while I was off line and harvested a bunch of information to try to spam folks with.
Unfortunately, we mods aren't on here 24/7 and occasionally a spammer will slip through the cracks.
We check/lock spammers by username, so if you're looking for an e-mail, you won't find it. That information is unavailable to members for security reasons.
Texasbanjo I don't think that answered my question. Why wouldn't a text search of "Royalwhite67" bring up this thread? It's listed many times.

Wish I could answer your question, but I have no idea how a name would automatically bring up a thread. Maybe you checked before the name was put on there as locked? Other than that, it's a question for someone more computer savvy than me.
Thanks for this post! I just put a banjo up for sale on the site and got an email from lohmannj230, one of your flagged scammers.
I've got enough grey in my beard (and have received enough emails from Nigerian princes) that this smelled downright phishy from the start.
Here's the sketchy email he sent:
Hello Stan,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I really appreciate your mail-back but I would like to let you know I am okay with the Terms and Conditions of sale as seen on the advert including Your Final asking Price as Stated. I have gone through the content of the advert once again and am very satisfy.Payment will be made out via a Cashier Check which will be issued to you for the payment and pick up will be arranged after the Cashier Check is Fully Cleared by your Bank. I will not be able to come over to view it because I'm always busy at work but I believe that all the details of the advert are right and will want an update about the Service History. You don't have to worry yourself about the shipment, My Shipper will take care of pick up as soon as you confirm the payment is Cleared by your Bank. Let me know if there is any other miscellaneous payment like, the tax charges, etc. that will be added to it. Glad you checked the spammers' thread. I do believe it's helped a lot of people deciding whether or not to continue a dialog with someone.

I have had two people try this on me the last few months. (Overpayment Scam)
I think this one is a scam with hacked user account davidlwoolard
https://www.banjohangout.org/classified/103381
Guy emailed me pics with date written on piece of "paper" for verification. Had tomorrow's date on it (probably overseas) and was photoshopped into a picture off of Reverb. Every picture is from Reverb. Asked for some different pictures and no response so far. Asked where located and he said Portland but his Profile address said NC. I asked why discrepency said he recently moved. Next time I looked at profile the name changed to Soyfan Woolard (was David Woolard before) and location changed. Just doesn't smell right. Banjo is below market value too. Check it out. Thanks.
heavy5
His IP is from Chicago, IL. There is no other information about him on his home page. What do you base your opinion he's a scammer on? If you have something he's sent you, PM or send it to me and I'll take a look.

Maybe I'm being too presumptuous ?
No, you're not being at all presumptuous. He's a new member with nothing on his home page to tell you anything about him. If he won't send pictures, then he either isn't interested in a sale, thinks it's too much trouble..... or maybe is a spammer.
I'd give him a few days. Maybe he has family in for Easter or has traveled to see family. Maybe he had to work, might be sick... could be a dozen reasons why he hasn't gotten back to you.
I bought a bridge from a member. He seemed like a very nice guy but something was off. I'm a trusting sort so I went ahead and paid with friends and family.
It's been two weeks and it has not shown up. He said he sent it without a tracking number. I've tried contacting him by email and BHO message several times about about a refund with no response.
I've reported it to the mods and he was sent a message by one of them. I will give it another week to see if the bridge shows up or I get a response. If not then I would not buy anything from this member. His username is Cabinking.
