I take my hat off to you Al - I’d love to be able to do stuff like that with metal - couldn’t do the firearms stuff here but I admire yours skills …. As I type I’m
In my ‘shop’ well shed developing my prototype gun build - my son is playing Bugsy malone next month and I’m in charge of the splurge guns
I had n shot 24.5 grains of powder....with all the same componants..
Worked fine.. n..probly about 2900 fps..guessin..
But the lighter loads just shoot better...in terms of accuracy..
N.. the 44 stevens is kept low.. due to action strenth...
50 to 75 yards is what I usually gather meat at for range around here..
So I like to zero at 50 yards..
I would like to do a suppressed rifle...
But it costs a lot for a permit to build one...n subject to other conditions..
I do not want to deal with...
I value the way I make a living so I do not do that folly...having to deal with the ATF n all...
sub sonic loads are more quiet all on Thayer own..
So I shoot a lot of pistol cals in rifle barrel configuration...
Cheap on power too..
You are right about Bill Ruger!
I did not make the connection but now that you mentioned it, that’s what he did.
He was a great man. Ambitious, marketing savy, wealthy. He created an empire. I’ve owned several Ruger firearms. Some I liked, others not so much.
I once had a Ruger #1, 30-06, that shot 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards, with a Leupold 2-7x scope.
Like an idiot, I traded it away. I’ve regretted it ever since. Among the dumbest things I’ve ever done.
As far as gunsmith artistry and creativity go, IMO he was very good, but not in your league.
A revisit to an old progect..
25acp rifle..
Found an old can of hs5 powder in good shape..
Put together some ammo..n wholly crap..!
That little lead ball penitrates 5" of pine...!
Still super quiet to shoot too..
Heh..i bought th old 1/2lb can fer $2....
Probly get 10 thousand shots out of it..
Made a little funnel to load the powder in thos tiny cases too...

Maybe that is why I love Rugers!
I think your.257 wildcat from a 7.62x39 is an awesome idea.
I have not checked, but it’s probably been done.
Still, a stroke of genius.
Seems to me, that they are perfect for each other.
I think a 7.62x39 will shoot a 125gr bullet around 2200 fps.
I don’t see any reason you can’t get at least that with a 100gr Nosler Partition.
If that’s all you could get, it would still be a legitimate round for deer size game.
I think I will see what I can find out.
I’ve not been excited about anything firearm related for some time.
This gets my attention.
The 7.62 x 39..is just that...
I bought a .308 win barrel used fer $10.00..
N had that reamer..
So it is reamed to .7.62..
The other case started out as a .300 blackout..
N..i necked that down to .257..
I figger .it will be real close to a .256 win mag in performance when i am done or a 6.5 Grendel..
Both should be fun to shoot...
Another project i am doing is fixin up a Universal m1 carbine ..me son wants one...
Light handy..no real recoil..
Me..i just do not like chasin all that brass..
N perfur single shot extractor only guns..
They are fun projects imo..

Cut n threaded it to fit the reciver..
N then made up a new cartridge..
Used a 218 bee reamer.. made bushings to fit the .270 barrel..
Viola.. ah .270-bee...
Or a 270-20...if I were to have used a 32-20 case..n necked it down...
Also picked up an old ideal 105 lovern bullet mold..
Gas checked....
Antique gun..n antique mold..
The mold makes fantastic bullets...
Fun little project..!
Makin up loads fer it..now..
No sights on it yet..
But shootin off the round of the barrel is workin out real good..
We have a Stevens 414 Falling Block in 22 Short, Heavy Barrel. The only thing I know about it was that they were only made from 1909-1932. The lever is a little loose/hangs during lockup. Any suggestions on how to tighten that up? I'm thinking its the link that may be wollowed out. But I have not taken it apart to confirm. I love the Rolling and Falling Block rifles.
