Though he's pretty good, watching Cal Raleigh trying to "trap" a low pitch t'other night had me thinking, "WTF?!?!?  ... this isn't supposed to happen beyond 12 year-olds*."

Didn't Casey Stengel once "ask" about the Mets: "Can't anybody here play this game?"    [Or something like that.]

I ain't never been to Jarry Park, but it's a fair bit (wouldn't wanna walk it today, the shape I'm in) north of the Big Owe. These days it's a moot point - no major league teams.* I was at the B.O. for the '76 Olympics. I was at the pool, too, and at the Forum for gymnastics. I found the Forum much better for watching hockey (including when my team, Loyola, beat the U of T 1-0 in overtime in the national semi-finals).

*Although major league soccer is played in Saputo Stadium, which has a close-by view of the B.O.;s tower.

So while you good folks are yammering about beisebol, I had a disappointing brush with l'hockey today.

Back around Labor Day (US version) I gave my kid sister tickets to the Providence Bruins' home opener. The game was played today.

The ProBru are the AHL team of the Broons, and are far more conveniently located relative to the Big Team than are some others. For example, if a player gets called up to Edmonton, they've gotta get there from Bakersfield, California. There are worse distances.

But Providence, Rhode Island, is about an hour from Boston - under normal circumstances. What a coincidence: yours truly lives on Cape Cod, which is roughly an hour from Boston and from Providence. Under normal circumstances.

Now, if you've never been to Cape Cod, you should know this: although it started its existence as a Terminal Glacial Moraine (courtesy of the last ice age) it is, for all intents and purposes, now an island. The Cape Cod Canal, which is now primarily used by pleasure boats, cruise ships and the occasional car carrier or ATB, transects the narrow point. One drives to the Cape by way of two nearly identical bridges, both of which opened in 1935. Although reasonably well maintained, they are both harrowing drives: four lanes, two each way, separated only by a double-line of yellow paint, and the lanes were designed for smaller cars, slower speeds and much smaller populations than we see today.

And today, we started a three-day Nor'easter which, blessedly, will help reduce our current drought. It will also last into at least Tuesday, rendering tomorrow (a national holiday, sort of) a washout. Many people who were visitin' said "Screw it, we're going home" and three of 'em opted to collide on the bridge shortly before Sis and me were to cross it. A mess on any bridge; a fustercluck on a bridge such as these.

Traffic ground to a crawl a half a mile away, and I noticed - ominously - that there was no traffic coming the other way. Waze, which is the one Google product I regularly use, urgently suggested that I take the other bridge, and I followed its instruction, only to find that between the folks bailing due to weather and other Waze users, the road that parallels the Canal was just as constipated as the other bridge. A drive that was planned for arrival shortly before warmups was regularly re-calibrated in such a manner that it became evident that we MIGHT get to Providence sometime close to puck drop for the second period.

We decided to bag it. Essentially, we spent two hours driving right back to my house. The only good news was that we were able to listen to the first half of the Patriots/New Orleans Saints game and got back in time to see the (successful) second half, and we had a very nice dinner. I suppose that's not the ONLY good news - I tend not to go to Broons games due to the expense. I can take my sister to a ProBru game and get great seats and spend less, including parking and mileage, than one nosebleed seat at the Gahden would cost. I'm out the cost of the seats and the parking, but that woulda happened if I'd been going to see the big team, and it would've cost much more. Sure am glad I wasn't driving up to Logan to get on a flight.

But damn, what a disappointment. By the way, the ProBru won, in part thanks to a hattie by Fabian Lysell, who might be one of the most aggravating first-round picks the Broons have made in recent history.

Oh no,, another nightmare tonight, Skip,, you reminded me of my harrowing misadventure on Cape Cod back about 20 years ago. lol.
As for the Providence Rhode Island Reds , I’m reminiscing now re if any former St. Catharines TeePees played in that fair city. Which again reminds me,, sheesh, of another close call with the semi just south of there in West Warwick. More teeth-grinding tonight….
