Owen I heard that “they’re let’em play” line the other night. From where I sit that throws the whole penalty-assessment business out into the ether. There’s enough trouble with defining close “hockey plays” as opposed to “sin-bin-ready infractions”. P deBoer is furious re a no call that led to an Oilers goal (actually not a rough-house play but the Kulak over the glass non call [where's Dennis O'Brien when ya need him?])… why change the refereeing just because it’s playoff time?
(fwiw, there’s an uprising taking place - fans all over social media saying the league has ordered officiating to favo(u)r the Oilers…. McDavid deserves a Cup…?… there’s a conspiracy under every rock/puck)

Nothing new under the sun.

Including this shot, which remains one of my faves.

Ahh,,, the pigeon-toed sweetheart next door…

Congratulations to the Florida Panthers for weathering the Hurricane onslaught and finding a way to advance to the Cup final. The Canes could have filled the net what with all their close-in chances, but alas, the Piedmont fans drifted off disappointed after all was said & done.
(a shoutout to Carter Verhaeghe, a shifty forward of Dutch lineage, for his skill at bulging the twine)

Every year an American team wins the Cup and every year Canadians post comments about how the system is rigged against Canadian teams, specifically blaming Buttman. We live in the age of conspiracy theories, even in sports.

I remember George ("don't call me Jorge") Bell of the BooYays in the 1980’s complaining that the umps were favo(u)ring American teams over the Canadian. He loudly proclaimed (he wasn’t exactly a shrinking violet) that a Canadian team would never win a World Series.

Not saying that's impossible. But I have to give the edge to Florida for the following reasons:

1) Snot factor: Florida plays a game designed to pi$$ off their opponents. Good as they are, I'm not convinced the Oilers have the self discipline to resist being baited by the likes of Tkachuk, Bennett and Marchand. Florida will deliberately push every button they can.

2) Team depth: no question that McDavid and Draisatl are phenomenal talents who make a lot of things happen, particularly when playing together. But I think Florida is a deeper team up and down the lineup, and was before Hyman got knocked out of the playoffs.

3) Which Stuart Skinner is going to show up?  He can be a stud, but he can also be flighty. At the other end of the ice, Bobrovsky is a proven championship goalie who's pretty much unflappable.

Like I said, it could be Oilers in 7. It's going to be rowdy either way. But for the above reasons, I'm saying Panthers in six.

Tough call, but I’m of the belief that sending positive vibes out into the (Oilers) universe allows for a better chance of success (enter Twilight Zone theme). Hyman’s loss is a bitter pill to swallow, however methinks the snot factor of Kane , Perry, and a couple of other prickly characters can offset the ratfink antics of the Everglades combatants. Skinner needs to be on his game,, Bob has had the odd rough outing. Oilers have home ice advantage this year,,, it’ll be a toss-up.

Methinks an “errant stick” should only warrant a 1/one minute penalty. Most of’em are totally accidental, never mind the embellishments. & as for blood warranting 4/four minutes, ridiculous!

Name-dropping #67 , just for you, Paul from 1,000 islands…

I see Dwayne Roloson ("Roly the Goalie") being interviewed ; his coach in Simcoe was Al Harrington , who was my last coach in 1973 when I toiled for the OHA Intermediate B Simcoe Chiefs.

(sorry - no Davey Keon, Ken Dryden, Rochdale, or Mariposa Folk Fstvl stories.... )

I'm not sure I can handle too many more overtimes in this series... games finishing at midnight interfere with my beauty sleep.

... where does this rank on the Babble Spectrum?

I've been watching bits of the NCAA Women's Softball World Series.   The expert (?) analyst just described what goes into a batter getting  hits: " ... her hands figure out a way to get it done."

5 - 0 Texas after one; I don't envision a comeback  ..... might have to switch over to le 'ockey.

^^^ not as ridiculous as it seems at first. I’m of the belief that after initial struggles learning to pick the banjo that your fingers will find the sweet spot and best stroke for good tone. One's subconscious mind knows more that your self-directed thinking ,,, (again, enter Twilight Zone theme music)

Yes, indeedy, "not as ridiculous as," but rather "more ridiculous than."   wink

If the analyst had said something like: In this situation she does/did such-and-such with her hands, I'd say it might qualify as a worthwhile analysis.

... subconscious mind .... fair enough.

... subconscious hands .....  I have my doubts.

Does the brain [via the ears] determine what is good tone, or is it the fingers that make that determination?

The secret to hitting - George Springer, a Connecticut native and a Hartford Whalers fan of bygone days, had batting gloves made with the Whaler colo(u)rs. He’s been hot ever since.

Huh?!?!?

I thought the secret was "bat speed"  i.e. having the bat pass through the strike zone quickly while simultaneously having it spend "more time in the strike zone."

I think I'm gonna get confused.

.... and that's ignoring the benefits of rubbing the bat with a bone [though not entirely to improve hitting, I'm told].

Would the Whalers' colour work for a batter that's a Maple Laffs fan [assuming ballplayers would admit to it.  wink ]

As to yer query, no, a batter must use batting gloves with colours of their favourite hockey team. A subconscious conflict of interest will arise if donning Whaler colours as opposed to Maple Leaf colours,  rendering a humiliating strikeout.
(enter #3 Twilight Zone theme music….)

... Fair enough, so long as the hands didn't "figure out a way" to counter the subconscious.  sad
