So my beloved Brooins have coughed up Brandon Carlo (solid D man, going to the Laffs); Charlie Coyle (strong middle-6 C who has been punching above his weight for a while, going to Colorado); Justin Brazeau, burly fourth-line forward whose presence in the NHL is a dramatic story of persistence and will (going to Minnesota) and...

The Captain, Number 63, Brad Marchand. Going to Florida to form a street gang with Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett. My prediction is that he'll have a lot of fun there, watching every other team in the league tremble. That team is going to be a MAJOR PITA to play against.

Meantime, something needed to happen here in town... be interesting to see what comes next. But we do know there are some nice draft picks heading our way. Damn shame it's a weak class this year...

Oh, I almost forgot:

Oh, and I forgot Trent Frederic, another rowdy middle-six forward, who will now add some grit and sandpaper to the Edmonton Oilers. My friends in western Canuckistan, I predict you'll enjoy watching him play. He's scrappy.

Marchand's first presser as a Florida Panther (run time just shy of 20 minutes). He was pretty emotional about how everything went down.

Yup. And what the rest of North America can miss is how much Marchand has grown as a person. When he came up, Boston fans had definite mixed feelings, ultimately landing on "he may be a rat, but at least he's OUR rat..."

And yes, he's done things that were beyond the pale. OTOH, over the past five years his game - although still played with nearly unmatched intensity - has become a lot cleaner. He's developed into a true leader - it's not a mistake that the Bruins made him captain last year. He has earned the respect of other players in the league - they hate to play against him, but they admire who he is and what he does, and they like him off the ice. Even the refs are reported to like him these days.

For a guess, you can probably credit Patrice Bergeron with being Marchand's spirit guide in a lot of this. Bergie sort of put Marchand under his wing (figuratively as well as literally), built him up when he needed it, confronted him when he had to, and asked the critical question: "what do you want to be remembered for?"

Marchand took that to heart. So yeah, folks can go on hating Brad Marchand if they want. Boston already knows. Florida is about to find out. He's a unique individual, and even at this stage of his career, most teams (and their fan bases) would love him if they knew.

And on top if it all, on and off the ice, nobody chirps like 63. He's hilarious.

So much great young talent out there these days! Detroit is definitely one to watch. So, in my opinion, is Utah.

My Broons might not have that level of talent, but at least they're starting to build up a youth movement again... and their draft capital for the next few years is as good as it's been in a long time.

I'm gobsmacked. And even though Marchand has forgiven Bennet, Zadorov obviously hasn't. As a friend texted me this morning, "I've been waiting for that beatdown for two years."

However it happened mechanically, he stopped a really nice tic-tac-toe attack on what was essentially a wide open net.

Top prospect, for sure. Plays for the franchise formerly known as the Teepees/Blackhawks.. so why not Chicago?
