I reluctantly have to agree that chaos in front of the net is to the attacking team’s advantage, since forwards are usually more skillful with softer hands than slow, lumbering defencemen.

Blue Jacket Jack Johnson invited him to try farming once he retires by giving him a couple of ache-ers, and while still down Marchand inadvertently blocked a shot from team-mate Mason Lohrei from the other direction.

It's no revelation, but this knuckle-dragger* is less concerned with the messages that are sent for "body checking" than he is with the messages that aren't sent for running off at the mouth and hot-dogging it [after gaining a sizable lead].   I know there's no rule against hot-dogging it, but I still like to think there should be some "respect for the game" [whatever that means.  ]

How do you think the following should be handled:  A player from team "A" is standing around, minding his own business, during a "scrum" and a player from team "B" comes up, grabs player "A" by the neck of A's sweater and starts jerking to/fro/back/forth, and then as likely as not tries to give "A" a half-hearted face-wash once the official has stepped in between?

Respect for the game? Thank you,, that’s what I’ve been expounding for years now,,, bring it up a notch into the more classy, beautiful sport that it is. But pugnacity and intimidation puts bums in the seats, so I’m not holding my breath. Chirping, trash-talking etc. is so common I can’t see it getting under players’ skins much ,,,, now, perhaps a super hotdog move like a 15 foot empty-netter slap shot is above and beyond the Queen’s Rules of Buckingham. Best way to shut up chirpers, as I’ve mentioned before, is to lay a few heavy body checks on them and run the score up to embarrass them. They’ll soon get the message that it’s to their disadvantage to rile up the opposition.
As for your example re player B against A, the ref should hand out a roughing, unsportsmanlike, and delay  of game penalty - yes 6/six minutes in the sin bin. That should stop the repulsive hijinks.

I don't get the connection: Player from team "A" is running off at the mouth. Player from team "B" gives him a (or a few) heavy body check(s). How does this lead to team "B" embarrassing team "A" by running up the score?

Instead of a heavy body check, why not an ache-er [as Skip mentioned above]?   ... so long as the guy [team?] dishing it out is okay with the results, then everything should be kosher, no?

I didn’t say there was a direct connection between heavy body checking and running up the score (although one might lead to the other). I proposed heavy body checks AND running up the score. If you can’t run up the score then at least the body checks might embarrass a player in his home barn.
I’d put “acher” in the dirty-play category,, not appropriate, I would guess, in Lord Stanley’s eyes.

What does it matter if something is "dirty"?  Isn't the salient factor that it gets penalized, leading to an opportunity to run up the score [i.e. a real beautiful .... cough, splutter. cough .... part of any sport, IMNSHumbleO].      Was Avery's "sloppy seconds" comment acceptable?   What about the "gamesmanship" (??) of somebody wants to taunt Bedard with b.s. about his mom and Perry?  Or somebody trash-talking about an opponent's child's developmental delays?  No body would pay much attention and if it's not penalized .....  s-u-r-e.  

Btw, did the NHL have an era or even a few seasons where the general, over-all play embodied "the beautiful sport .... etc."?

Well, I think we view the game through a different lens, Owen. I'd just like to see less of Stewart-types.  Geez, the guy ends up a referee and he still wants to see guys get pounded to a pulp. Why don't these dysfunctional goons take up boxing or martial arts?  And yeah, I'd like to see the trash talking stop too.  Maybe I'm expecting too much.

I hope we see it thru different lenses ... I wouldn't want anybody to think I see running of at the mouth as something that's irrelevant or easily pooh-poohed away.  Fwiw, I see it as a precursor to stick work and dust-ups.  My logic says clamping down on trash talking would be a natural starting point .... and then deal with the other residual/remaining problem(s) ... deal with a cause rather than the symptom??

In leagues that, for all intents and purposes, have gotten rid of fighting per se,  I don't know just how it's being handled ... haven't heard of any analysis of the QMJHL's efforts.  I hope it's not by replacing it with scrums, headlocks and face-washing.    [Implementation of a triple minor you mention could prove "interesting," as would the ref's efforts at consistency/fairness.]

Edit: My daughter and SIL who have kids in youth basketball in AB apparently are seeing 'way too much taunting [gestures and hand motions more so than verbal] filter down from the NBA.  I don't watch NBA, so was unaware that it's occurring at that level.

Yes, I minimized the effects of trash-talking but I'll admit I'm wrong about that. Maybe kids should be taught in peewee already not to emulate the trash-talking and other antics that the pros display,, it’s a start anyway to change the “hockey culture” , but again it’s the pugnacity that sells, so….
I’ve just read things or heard interviews about Stewart over the years,,,,, as a player he was a vicious lunatic at times.
Most of my criticism of hockey goonery comes from back when I was playing ,, people outside the game would almost always ask about the fighting first… it bothered me that the great game had such a crummy reputation. I seem to remember Gretzky saying at one time that fighting should be eliminated, even though he benefited from it being a skinny 170 pounder.

(and lest I not forget the raisin d'etre for this thread, DCMD , as I mentioned before, made boatloads of dough from those Rock'em Sock'em videos,, then turns around and called the enforcers, after 3 of them committed suicide, a bunch of drug addicts. )

For me it says more about him than it does about the problems (?) of fighting and running off at the mouth in hockey.  I hope that the fact that he made money on his videos hasn't skewed my perception or rationale(?) too much.

Edit: I see the issues of a) goons/enforcers and b) a fight stemming from an infraction [generally a stick infraction], or giving a guy a shot in the yap for yapping as pretty much separate and distinct issues.  Was Ted Lindsay a goon?
