^^ reminds me of up on one of the remote reserves.  Our principal helped out with Sat. evening radio bingo to fund raise for the breakfast program,  After the last number was called there was 1/2 an hour for guys to phone in and have their winning (?) cards verified.

The principal asked me for some music that he could use as a filler, so I loaned him my CD soundtrack from "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou."

When he brought it back on Monday, he still appeared a bit shaken/on edge when he told me about it.  Seems a local had called in his card and then ended with, "... AND DON'T PLAY ANY MORE OF THAT ****IN' MUSIC!!!"

Fun day with the Bruins' Centennial game yesterday. The opening ceremonies maybe went on a bit longer than optimal, but I'll admit there were occasions when I had a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.

John Bucyk still makes it to the show, hobbled as he is. Harry Sinden did a video message. Ray Bourque has missed a lot of workout time and not many meals, but it was great to hear him reminisce with the NESN guys during the second period.

The only real shocker was seeing how old Terrry O'Reilly looks.

That the Bruins clobbered the lowly Habs shouldn't have been a surprise, but then again, the Bruins have put up plenty of nasty surprises so far this season, so I'll take the two points with gratitude. Next up: Dee-troit.

Oh, and it looks like it's that time again...

Don't know, actually. What I do know is that there's an on-ice official I've seen at Providence Bruins (AHL) games several times who is not a linesperson. She wears orange stripes on her sleeves, which is probably wise in that she's a mere slip of a thing and not of the sort to get between two big, angry defensemen.

She definitely knows her stuff, though.

There were representatives from each of the "eras" the marketing wonks could designate for the ceremony. In that the earliest Bruins players are all long since passed, they were represented by children and grandchildren. Not sure who the guy in question is, but he's one of the latter.

As for #13, Buck Martinez (remember him?... Tabby's sidekick) wore it and broke his leg blocking home plate. 

Only clue that will be given .... among many other things, the ^^ BHOer bragged that "he couldn't be bothered" reading the contributions of others [i.e. He was letting us know, in plain Henglish that his posts were what counted; the posts of others, well not so much.]

And as for redundant blather*, I figure we're just getting to the prime age.   When we we re test-driving the snowbird lifestyle, on our walks within the MHP we'd briefly stop to "exchange pleasantries" with whoever was out and about  and appeared to be killing time.  Our sister and BIL were part of a group of about 5 couples that did pretty much all the same activities, and naturally (?) we got to know them.  By about the third telling of the redundant blather, I'd comment to my wife that someday I might get to the stage where I didn't notice, but I wasn't there yet. Her advice never varied: "Oh, just stay quiet, it won't hurt you."

As for the red underline, it's telling me that I have a spelling error [i.e. I guess "they" must figure they're better spellers than me].    I see it when I'm composing [cough, splutter, cough], but it disappears when I hit "post."

A who's-Uhro-Vaakanaien*  and a fourth rounder?!?!?   .... is that Trouba's real value?

Edit: We just got back from our daughter / SIL / 3 grandsons place in AB.  Even as a more-or-less  detached fan (?)  I figured the Oilers need a top defenseman and wondered aloud what they'd have to give up to get Makar.  My SIL said a "star player" and I countered with a b-i-g star and a first-rounder.   Maybe they could have gotten Trouba for one of their no-namers* and a fourth rounder????

Good to see ex-NHL’ers staying out of the breadline at the local mission. A lot of these guys missed the BIG money of today, but I guess they did alright. Marcel married a gal from the area when he was a St. Catharines Blackhawk - he went to the French school in Welland the first year because he hardly spoke English. He’s had a few businesses in the Niagara area, on both sides of the border/bordre.

Rumors have been swirling around Trouba since before the start of the season, which is probably contributory to the unimpressive season he's logged to date. But despite wearing the "C" his numbers of late just haven't been good, and there've been rumbles in various corners that he's been (ahem) difficult in the locker room.

Vaakanainen is an old friend in Noo Wingland. He was drafted in 2017 by the Bruins and played in the system between 2018 and 2021. He played 31 games in Boston but spent most of his time in Providence. Boston let him slide and Anaheim picked him up on more or less a league-minimum deal, renewed in 2024 on a 1-year deal at a $1.1mm AAV. He's basically a journeyman left-shot D in a depth position.

Making the whole deal more curious: he's currently on IR. Making things even more curious: Anaheim is taking on Trouba's full contract with nothing retained by the Rangers. Trouba is signed through the 25-26 season with a cap hit of $8mm, although Anaheim will only pay him $6mm due to frontloaded signing bonuses.

In other words, the Rangers essentially traded him for a bag of pucks but got rid of an underperformer and added a nice chunk of cap space, with which I predict they'll attempt to do some damage come the trade deadline. And Anaheim had cap space to burn and still does.

Seems to me that NY got the better part of this deal...

Thanks, Skip .... undoubtedly your analysis is more thorough than mine.     I see Anaheim has lots of company down at the bottom of the standings, but it seems to me that being traded there is kinda like being tossed onto the scrap heap .... and I dunno whether Trouba has fallen that far.   The Oilers have successfully reclaimed a couple of problems (?) in Perry and Kane and they do need some help along the blue line.... ??

Anaheim is definitely a work in progress. But one advantage of being a perpetual also-ran means good draft positioning. Anaheim is definitely banking on developing young talent - including forwards Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson and former Boston College phenom Cutter Gauthier. All are 21 or younger and are putting up decent numbers. There are similar promising talents on the blue line.

Trouba instantly became the Duck with the highest AAV upon being traded. Most of Anaheim's veteran forwards aren't great; this is clearly a team in a re-build and the best explanation I can arrive at is that the team wanted some real veteran presence to help build the kids for the future - sort of like how Chicago signed Nick Foligno to be a spirit guide for Connor Bedard (I'm still pissed Don Sweeney let Foligno go. Uncle Nick is all class). And in addition to having some promising youngsters on its AHL affiliate in San Diego, Anaheim is sitting pretty for draft picks this spring - and next.

So nobody expects them to be a threat for a while, but they're potentially building towards something decent.

BTW - there's lots of fascinating data here, if you're interested in team cap space, player AAVs and stats, etc. It includes stats for recent retirees, but it doesn't go back as far as the Dark Ages.

Speaking of which: I'm definitely a stats nerd nowadays - the business of hockey is very nearly as interesting to me as the game itself - but your knowledge (and Chuck's!) of the history of it all never fails to impress - and delight.
