It does gall me that games are going to pay-to-play streamers. I get the reasons for it, but I think there's definitely a balance that needs to be struck to keep the love of the game alive. Fortunately, here in Noo Wingland we have NESN, which covers the vast majority of Bruins games home and away. A handful are carried on Disney-controlled channels (including TNT, ESPN (1 through 23) and ESPN+, which is subscription). NESN does an excellent job of covering the team (for those who care, Jack Edwards is gone and the new PxP guy, Judd Sirott, is EXCELLENT).

Outside of Boston, many people loathed Jack. I understand why, but I miss him anyway - he was an unabashed homie and could be funny as hell. Also a good play caller before his speech problems started.

I don't just miss Jack talking hockey. I miss Jackie, though she does show up now and then on TNT coverage.

I have cable TV, but other than HNIC on Saturdays very little hockey. Lots of NFL football on Seattle channels but I don’t follow it much. I agree, Skip, they might be shooting themselves in the foot by losing fans and possible new fans.

In fairness... can't speak to how the market works up in Yon Frozen North, but I do know that there have been a number of U.S. cities with NHL teams that have had issues running the games in a financially viable manner. Here in the upper right corner US I can say that the aforementioned NESN - which also carries the Red Sox (team owner John Henry is the majority owner of NESN... he also owns the woefully failing Boston Globe and Pittsburgh Penguins, and some soccer team in the UK whose name eludes me at the moment) appears to run profitably. So does MSG network in NYC. Of course, the latter is also blessed with not one, not two, but THREE NHL teams within a very small radius....

I wonder if the GMs in the other big sports are also "constantly putting out fires."    IF hockey players are a breed apart [DC/MD said they were, but I have my doubts] it stands to reason that it's something in their upbringing/background.

Fwiw, I've had a couple of teachers pass on their observation to me that "hockey players" are responsible for a disproportionate amount of ***t within the [small rural-ish] schools in this part of the world.

Any updates/insights on Robin Lehner?

How many NHL GMs have taken on players later convicted of murder, or had players busted on weapons charges, etc.? Because that stuff happens in the NFL....

Can't say, but we've had minor league coaches charged with sexual abuse of their players.

Gun charges? Here?

Rangers' forward Matt Rempe has been suspended for eight games, following a hit on Dallas's Miro Heiskanan. Rempe was assessed for both elbowing and boarding, given a five-minute major and ejected from the game.

This link will take you to the NHL website report, along with the Player Safety video showing the infractions and the analysis that led to the suspension.

Rempe has skated in a grand total of 22 NHL games over two seasons. His points totals, both in the NHL and the AHL, are minimal. His penalty minutes are staggering in both. Bottom line: he's a goon, and that's what the Rangers organization apparently wants out of him.

I don't mind a good donnybrook in a hockey game - it's part of the fun - and I don't think it's a problem for teams to carry players who can stand up for themselves and their teammates. But it seems to me that Rempe is there primarily to beat people up.

I can't see a good case for keeping him in the National if he keeps this kind of nonsense  up. Yes, it's a rough game. OTOH I see no need for teams to carry an on-staff assassin.

Even though the NHL is an arm of "entertainment," Rempe is an ass ... ditto for those who promote/defend this and similar b.s.*.

Tongue-in-cheek I suspect this "spirited bout"** https://www.google.com/search?q=vs.+gustafson+bruikns&rlz=1C1CHBF_enCA1116CA1116&oq=vs.+gustafson+bruikns&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIJCAEQIRgKGKABMgkIAhAhGAoYoAEyCQgDECEYChigATIHCAQQIRiPAtIBCjIzMjc2ajBqMTWoAgiwAgE&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:63de0e13,vid:mYMCS6fw9z4,st:0 falls into the category of good donnybrook.  wink

* that includes staged fights and "sending a message" fighting after a team reaches the requisite "5 goals up."

Edit: ** i have no knowledge whether any "running off at the mouth" or other factors factored into it, so I've not reserved judgment ... but like the eminent philosopher  Red Green  says:  " ....I can change if I have to."

He was entertaining for a few days last season just due to his size and enthusiasm,,,Olivier tuned him in but I guess he figures they’re paying him to be goon-ish. To quote our raison d’etre (DCMD) on this esteemed thread, “Never apologize,, go down with the ship!!”

The grandkid Ollie and my SIL & daughter and I were at the game at The Saddledome Saturday. Well, at least we saw that Bedard kid get a goal and an assist,, despite the loss. (& it just wasn’t the same without Jackie in the barn…..)

Our long multi-national nightmare is over.

The Christmas break is complete and the NHL resumes tonight with a generous slate of games.

It was such an empty feeling that I got a doozy of a cold for 3 days and had to stay home over Christmas. Ugh…… drop the friggin’ puck!

..... but, but, but,  there's the World Juniors and the Spengler Cup.   I watched (?) parts of a couple or three games yesterday ... the Cdn. juniors look pretty strong, but I'm not going to bet against the USA.

Edit: The use of full cages by U18 that apparently goes by the wayside in favor of visors has me "wondering" about whether the "influences" are mainly top-down or bottom-up.   I've heard opposing viewpoints on this thread.  devil

I’d have to get a trial subscription to get the World Juniors , and it runs out after 4 days. I’ll wait for the last four days to do that. For now I’ve watched the highlights.  As for visors/cages , I have no opinion... not sure of its importance.

Somebody tried to tell me that players would just carry on with what they'd gotten used to in minor hockey .... the cage/visor ^^ is just an example of how/why I saw (see?)  things differently.   I'm not sure of the importance either. wink

^^^ I got mine in time… but it wasn’t personalized. Must’ve known I come from an immigrant family (Christmas glad tidings are over,, I can go back to trash-talking, chirping, and gamesmanship)
