Johnny Gaudreau, star forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and his brother were killed by a suspected drunk driver while out bicycling last night. Apparently they were in town for their sister's wedding.

Awful. Story here.

Buck Martinez was up near Sioux Lookout at a fishing lodge,, caught himself a big old Muskie.
He once got a broken leg blocking the plate at home, then on the same play threw to second to try nail a runner. Used to tell swelled-headed Dave Stieb off.

(I played hockey in the Sioux Lookout barn back in 1973,, a tin Quonset hut type building. It was -15*F outside,, I swear it was -25*F inside sitting on the bench between shifts)

Was off camping (?) and leave computers, phones, etc. home if feasible, so hadn't heard about Gaudreau ... shocker indeed.

As a kid on the farm, my mom often used the expression, "A change is a s good as a rest."  ... I think she was letting us know that complaining about our work/chores wasn't going to matter.  And seeing as we're on p. 105, here's a change:

From what I've seen [I dunno what's coming thru her ear buds] she ^^ seems to know something about beisbol ... unlike Jessica Mendoza who prefers to roll out the cliches... whether they make sense or not.

The Rays pitcher just stepped on the foul line while coming off the field .... the foul line fer cryin' out loud!!!  .... and on Friday the 13th.  If he doesn't get lit-up from here on in ..... ????

[Does that also apply when going out onto the field?]

RH pitcher, RH batter. If the batter is "way out in front of a pitch," [in this case it was a slider to the outer edge of the plate] will the batted ball typically go to right field or left field?

I'm thinking it'll be hit out to left, since it's a slider that he would hit early (out in front of) and the ball would still be around the middle of the strike zone,,, but then I've never been a student of the physics of hitting baseballs.

Methinks it's a faux pas doing it going out onto the field cuz the pitcher will track white stuff out towards the mound & the hung-over home plate ump will bristle and call all border-line pitches in favour of the hitters. 

Methinks Jessica Mendoza [she of the inane, cliched babble] also isn't much of a student of the physics of beisbol.   [At least it sounded like her voice .... I didn't catch the introductions.] 

 And fwiw, the Rays won 3-1 with Littell picking up the win .... so much for the physics of baseball?!?!?

What’s with all the bees this year? Cardinals third baseman had one in his glove and it stung him…lol. Last week we had an outdoor jam & spent half our time swatting bees/wasps.

I think there's more than normal around here this fall .... but they seem pretty laid back ... at least so long as I/we "live and let live."  Mucho apples fall off our trees and there'll be a few munching on a hole/puncture and I can pick 'em up and windmill 'em into the farmer's field across the lane and so far not a buzz/hum in protest.

As a first baseman, mostly all I ever got from it was the walk of shame.  

It's about a 200 acre field, so I can concentrate on form/speed and not have to worry about "commanding the strike zone."

...but I do wonder what the wasps are thinking.... peacefully munching away >> spinning sensation >> sudden stop [although lots are on a low trajectory [darn physics!!] and bounce t or 4 times before stopping.

Buck just reminded me that the foul lines are painted on mowadays, not chalked.  So pitchers stepping on'em escape the old curse, I'm thinking.

I think J.C. coaching was one of those in-one-ear-and-out-the-other tidbits.... If I did hear she was from Rocanville, it didn't register.   

If she does well, the oil can will have to share top billing [I might be a new-age sensitive guy, and all that, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that ].

I was watching the Tigers/Rays game, and wondering whose halting voice that was commentating, found out it was Kirk Gibson who has Parkinson’s. The Tigers btw are 29-11 since Aug. 10, and after being sellers at the trade deadline are likely going to capture a wild card spot.

I can only name 6 , how about you?
