Some years ago a small rural town in Spain twinned with a similar town in Greece. The mayor of the Greek town visited the Spanish town. When he saw the palatial mansion belonging to the Spanish mayor, he wondered aloud how on earth he could afford such a house.
The Spaniard replied, "You see that bridge over there? The EU gave us a grant to construct a two-lane bridge, but by building a single lane bridge with traffic lights at either end, I could build this place."
The following year the Spaniard visited the Greek town. He was simply amazed at the Greek mayor's house; gold taps, marble floors, diamond doorknobs, it was marvellous.
When he asked how he had raised the money to build this incredible house, the Greek mayor said, "You see that bridge over there?"
The Spaniard said, "No"!
One day a Greek government worker was digging through his office drawers when suddenly he came upon a magic lamp. Since he'd heard these jokes before, he knew that he had to rub the lamp and make the genie come out.
So he rubbed the lamp and - oh, surprise out popped a genie. The genie asked, as genies will "What is your first wish?" The Greek government worker thought about it for a second, then replied "I would like to be rich!" So the genie granted him his wish, and POOF! the man was surrounded by piles of money rivalling the heaps of even Martha Stewart and Bill Gates.
Since the Greek government worker knew the whole wish process, the genie didn't even have to ask for number two before he said "My second wish is to be on an island with beautiful women surrounding me and obeying my every command!" And POOF!, he was there.
Then the Greek government worker or, as I like to call him, civil servant decided on his third wish "I don't want to do any work ever again!" and POOF! ubiquitous ironic twist he was back in his office in Athens.
European paradise:
You are invited to an official lunch. You are welcomed by an Englishman. Food is prepared by a Frenchman and an Italian puts you in the mood and everything is organised by a German.
European hell:
You are invited to an official lunch. You are welcomed by a Frenchman. Food is prepared by an Englishman, German puts you in the mood but, don’t worry, everything is organised by an Italian.
Car Problem
A man's wife came home and said, "Honey, the car won't start, but I know what the problem is."
He asked her what it was, and she told him there was water in the carburetor. Her husband thought for a moment, then said, "You know, I don't mean this offensively, but you don't know the carburetor from the accelerator."
"No," she insisted, "there's definitely water in the carburetor."
"Okay, honey, that's fine," he said. "I'll go take a look... where is it?"
"In the lake," she replied.

Scientists at the Canadian Research Facility built a gun
specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of Airlines and military
jets, all traveling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with
airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
NASA engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on
the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were
made, and a gun was sent to the NASA engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken
hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed
it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the
engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin,
like an arrow shot from a bow.
The horrified Americans sent the Canadian Research Facility the
disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the
windshield and begged the Canadian scientists for suggestions.
The Canadian Research Facility responded with a one-line memo:....
"Defrost the chicken."

A mechanic was removing the cylinder heads from the motor of a car when he spotted the famous heart surgeon in his shop, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager to come to take a look at his car. The mechanic shouted across the garage,"Hello Doctor!! Please come over here for a minute." The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked argumentatively, "So doctor, look at this. I also open hearts, take valves out, grind 'em, put in new parts, and when I finish this will work as a new one. So how come you get the big money, when you and me are doing basically the same work? "
The doctor leaned over and whispered to the mechanic.....
He said: "Try to do it when the engine is running".

Here is a link to how it shall be pronounced in Dutch: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/Nl-Vincent_van_Gogh.ogg. It contains some difficult sounds and I guess the Americans have chosen to ignore all sounds that is not present in daily American English.
In Sweden we use to pronounce more like "Gog"
Hi Andrew, many in Canada pronounce it as "go". I think it is our North American dialect and the fact that his name was probably mispronounced years and years ago and became as the accepted pronunciation. I would bet that in the U.K. there are many dialects which have very different pronunciations. So, you are right, these would only work here in N.A.

Potatoes:
Well, A Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other,
and finally they got married, and had a little sweet potato,
which they called 'Yam.'
Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time, they told her about the facts of life.
They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato,' and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots
Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into the potato
sack and make a rotten potato out of her!
But on the other hand she wouldn't stay home and become a Couch Potato either.
She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring cousins.
When she went off to Europe, Mr. and Mrs. Potato told Yam
to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland.
And the greasy guys from France called the French Fries. And when she
went out west, to watch out for the Indians so she wouldn't get
scalloped.
Yam said she would stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn't associate with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other
side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all the trucks that say,
'Frito Lay.'
Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that's
Potato University) so that when she graduated she'd really be in the
Chips.
But in spite of all they did for her, one-day Yam came home
and announced she was going to marry Tom Brokaw .
Tom Brokaw ?
Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset.
They told Yam she couldn't possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he's just......
Are you ready for this?
Are you sure?
