thats a great looking banjo - I like to see a banjo that has been played :)

It's certainly been played, but it probably doesn't need to look quite so disgusting. Would love to find some way of cleaning it without destroying the old hide. There are some tiny tears around the tailpiece area and it's stretched to the max, but still works well & sounds just as complex & dirty as it looks.

I have a pre-war Windsor #45 with a skin head that is groady-to-the-max. It doesn't really bother me, but I was thinking at one time about trying one of those art gum erasers. It might not be very effective, but I don't believe it would be destructive at all. You might want to give it a try. I personally think your Gibson looks wonderful.

I vote for leaving that wonderful old skin head just the way it is! (OK...so I'm a Yankee! :)

If it bothers you, I'd give the art gum eraser a try.  I have one from the 20's that says "Banjo Head Cleaner" stamped on it and it aint nothin' but a big ol' art gum eraser.
