A Melvin Wine tune, and TOTW for 23 Nov 2018. Trying my hand at 2 finger picking on this one. Not fully up to Melvin Wine speed, but this is as close as I'm going to get for now without totally flubbing it. Banjo (Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #2 with a pie-plate resonator) is tuned gCGCD.

I just worked this out from the Shades of Death Creek album by New Bad Habits (Chirps Smith, Dave Landreth, Tim Foss, and Andy Gribble). They play it much more up tempo and in key of D. I played in the key of C (gCGCD) here. This is played on a 1903 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #2.

Janet Burton and I got to talking and decided we needed to collaborate on a tune, so this is what came out. I recorded my track, sent it to Janet, then she added in her tracks. We are playing in the key of C. I am playing lead on an Enoch Dobson (gCGCD), and Janet is playing backup on her Gold Tone cello banjo and harmony (starts half we through) on her Gold Tone mini "Plucky. Janet tuned both her banjos to open G (gDGBD).

My "fooling around" version here. Banjo tuned in sawmill G (gDGCD). Played on a 1903 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #2 with calfskin head.

This is a clip from a semi-weekly jam with Larry Edelman (fiddle), Dave Parman (guitar), and me (banjo). I am largely faking it since this was the second time I had ever played the tune. Recorder was on my knee, so banjo is a bit more present relative to the other instruments, but posting anyway. I love playing tunes with these guys! Banjo (tuned to open G--gDGBD) is a 1903 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #2 with pie-plate resonator.

I got this from the Fuzzy Mountain String Band album. The Fuzzies got it from Alan Jabbour, who collected it from Henry Reed. According to the FMSB album notes, Mr. Reed did not have a name for this tune but he agreed that it sounded pretty close to the better known tune by the same name. I really like the quirky beginning of the A part on an Em. My rendition is played in standard G tuning (gDGBD) on a 1903 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #2.

This tune comes from Owen "Snake" Chapman, from his "Up In Chapman's Hollow" album (Rounder Records). I wish I could finger pick it like Paul Smith--maybe some day. But it is pretty fun for clawhammer style too. There are a lot more notes in the fiddle melody, so this is my banjo version of the tune. Banjo (Enoch Dobson with 11" rim) is tuned in Double D (aDADE).
