Porch playing on a Sunday afternoon. I will never get tired of experimenting with this tune. Maybe, because of this: http://chicagogenealogy.blogspot.com/2014/09/runkeeper-to-rescue-how-i-found-mr.html

Another practice recording uploaded for safekeeping. I was experimenting with foam by the bridge as a way of muting the metallic ring and I kind of like the way it changes the sound. Recorded 8 Nov 2013.

A banjo version of the tune inspired by the Dear Old Illinois recording of Stelle Elam playing it on the fiddle. The file has two separate recordings--similar, but different!

Learned from a combination of the Leftwich book, a workshop led by Rafe Stefanini, and the Kyle Creed recording. I commit a bit of tempo sin as I settle in and I need to figure out how to get better tone, but I really like playing this tune! And, yes, I live by a very busy road. :)

I turned on the recorder when I was playing last night and ended up saving eight tunes that I've been working on from lessons: Half-Shaved, Coming through the Canebreak, Jack Wilson, Soldier’s Joy, Tally Ho, Old Joe Clark, Donna’s Got a Rambling Mind, Cripple Creek. I'm uploading them for safe-keeping. What a happy thing--learning to play the banjo!

One of my favorite Dan Gellert tunes. I've struggled to figure out the structure but I think I might be getting close to maybe sort of having the appropriate number of measures? I love playing around with this tune! Someday, I'll cringe when I hear it, but right now, I like how it's coming along. : )

A quick "porch" recording of a Watson family tune that I originally learned from David Bragger. More information about it can be found in the 24 August 2018 TOTW post.

I've been playing around with this ever since it was suggested as a "trance tune." Lots of fun!

A quick, one-time-through, unpolished, unarranged, work-in-progress, recorded with a computer mic for TOTW. This is such a fun tune to experiment with on the porch. :)

I'm very fond of this tune. I picked up the basics from a Gaither Carlton recording and I've been experimenting with it ever since.

Porch playing. One take. A few things to still work on, but I'm happy with the way it's coming along.

A practice recording of a version of June Apple that I worked out for a contest earlier this month, thinking it would be better to plan ahead rather than play in porch mode in front of an audience. In retrospect, it was the wrong tune (chosen for the right reasons) and nervous mistakes got the best of me. Happens! I'm not sure I like where I've taken it--Mr. Ward, forgive me for that--but I like that the journey has been my own.

A lesson tune that I've been working on for a few months, uploaded so that it will be here when I want to look back on it someday. Recorded 12 Oct 2013.

I made this recording back in June to celebrate one year of toting a banjo around and I decided I should add it to the musical journal I've been keeping on my Hangout page. It's fun to be able to listen back. I hear things I'd like to improve in the months ahead but I'm happy with how things are going and, more importantly, I'm just happy playing the thing. : ) I learned this tune from one of David Bragger's YouTube videos.

Looks like it's been three months since I last added a tune to my Music tab. I've been experimenting with this one (I learned it from David Bragger) and so it's a bit all over the place at the moment, but it's a good measure of where I'm at and where I need to go at this point in time. One of my all-time favorites!

I'm back to working on this one, experimenting, looking for the pieces that will make a cohesive whole. Suggestions for improvements would be very welcome. I learned the basics of this tune from David Bragger.
