Celtic fingerstyle (short for "Irish-and-Celtic-3-finger-style-5-string banjo") renders this tune quite differently from melodic-style bluegrass picking, slowing down the tempo, swinging the tune more, and, using triplets where one would not find them in Bluegrass or Old-Time versions of the fiddle tune. Celtic fingerstyle variation techniques may be be used to play Old-Time, Bluegrass, Folk or British Isles tunes to give them a Celtic sound. This ancient march/jig, is recorded in mountain minor tuning and features Gabriel Donohue on nylon-string guitar and Robbie Walsh on bodhran. Notice how Donohue keeps the chords impressionistic and supportive of the melody, which is the core of Irish traditional music, independent of Western harmony. Rhythm is more important. Robbie is now the 2008 All-Ireland Fleadh Champion. Here's the trance-inducing Irish slip jig played as an air, slightly crooked and with a touch of rubato. I got this tune originally from Linda Hickman, who probably got it from The Bothy Band, since the notes conform to their famous version.

This classic piece by the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is perfect for Celtic fingerstyle banjo. It's a popular session tune, played with reverence for the last of the Irish harper-composers. The "clairseach" or Irish harp was tuned diatonically and had metal wire for strings, usually made of brass, silver, gold or a silver-gold alloy. Notice the crisp metallic tone of the banjo, which was achieved by using a steel violin mute on the bridge - but not pushed down as much as on 'Carolan's Draught' - giving the banjo a harp-like quality recalling the clairseach. The "clairseach" or Irish harp was tuned diatonically and had metal wire for strings, usually made of brass, silver, gold or a silver-gold alloy. This stately air is sometimes played in D Major, and it fits perfectly on the G-tuned 5-string banjo in G Major. Notice the more Baroque treatment here. I use both legato and staccato devices here, and unusual fretting-hand fingerings in the first and second parts, particularly the contrary motion (like counterpoint) in the second full measure. Staccato (single-string) techniques figure heavily towards the end of the second part. This air works beautifully as a seasonal melody along with ‘Carolan’s Concerto’ and so many others composed by the eminent Irish harper.

For beginners especially, I recorded the 5-string over MIDI backing tracks to help students with (optional) chords and bass lines. This is the tune that Carolan adapted from Thomas and William (Laurence) Connellan's famous air. Carolan was heard to say that "he would rather have been the author of 'Molly MacAlpin' than of any melody he himself had ever composed." [From Edward Bunting, The Ancient Music of Ireland (1840), p. 71.] This classic air is perfect for Celtic fingerstyle banjo in G tuning. The "clairseach" or Irish harp was tuned diatonically and had metal wire for strings, usually made of brass, silver, gold or a silver-gold alloy. That's Kenny Kosek on triple fiddles, also using an octave divider, and from Tony Trischka's Skyline: Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, Danny Weiss on guitar, Larry Cohen on bass, oh, and Kevin Maul from the Provincetown Jug Band on dobro. I wrote this in 1991 and recorded it on my Bucket of Bees, which is now digitized and available through iTunes.

Notice the syncopation on the recording and in the companion tablature here on BHO. I played to a piano backing track so that I could put in bass movement and chords in order for the syncopated figures to be heard against the normal downbeats and strong beats. I also play this with a considerable amount of swing (bounce) which gives the tune an even more syncopated feeling. Notice the full (TIM) pinches in the B-Part. This is a cakewalk, similar to ragtime, though it could be sped up and played as a driving breakdown. Playing tip: as tempo increases, the more the bounce (degree of swing) tends to even out. The focus here is to demonstrate syncopation and accenting in Scruggs-style picking. Big thanks to Taj Mahal for this lovely tune.

This was the first song I recorded in a real studio, in NYC, with Tony Trischka producing. I was green as a tree, but I had good people around me, so I eventually got there! David Grier is on guitar, Andrea Zonn on fiddle, Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, Kevin Maul on Dobro (who showed me this originally in A), Don Brooks on Harmonica, and Larry Cohen on bass (also producing). It's hard to record when everyone around you knows what they're doing, and you don't!

Notice the muted tone of the banjo, played with silver tie clips on the bridge. Play this one gently and let the notes ring as long as possible, going for most resonance. This is a lovely jig that uses "rolls" found in uilleann piping or Sligo-style fiddling. It's playing 5 notes in the space of 3, adding decorations (grace notes) above and below the main notes.
