Brian Boru's March - from Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo

Genre: Fiddle/Celtic/Irish / Playing Style: Other

This ancient march/jig, is recorded in mountain minor tuning and features Gabriel Donohue on nylon-string guitar and Robbie Walsh on bodhran. Notice how Donohue keeps the chords impressionistic and supportive of the melody, which is the core of Irish traditional music, independent of Western harmony. Rhythm is more important. Robbie is now the 2008 All-Ireland Fleadh Champion. With gratitude to Mel Bay for letting me upload this here, another sample from my first book/CD, Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo - find it here: http://www.melbay.com/Products/95759BCD/complete-book-of-irish--celtic-5string-banjo.aspx

Just curious: would Mel Bay be after me if I posted a version of it on my home page? Not sure how far the copyrights extend...
Cheers, Will

No, you can post your own version, just not this copyrighted version (without their express permission).  Yeah, I'd love to hear your version.

Thanks guys, if only this wasn't a learning CD, I would have put some variations in it. It is a haunting tune, and Ireland is at a foreign power's mercy again. Junk banks here. So sad. The politicians are not exactly the problem. It's the people believing that they can give their power away. Think of your own home.

This is really a haunting tune. I keep finding myself humming it. Really enjoyed. Thanks for sharing. Pat

Ah, Pat, glad you like it. You know, I play it now without re-tuning, no capo, in A Dorian. I was playing it today in fact. I have another book/CD coming out, beyond Best-Loved Jigs and Reels, so maybe, I'll put it in that. Thank you for listening, and for writing.

Yeah.. this is the best version I've ever heard of this song. I learned it in A min but I think E min may be the trad key.. I'm not sure.. really like it.
