This hornpipe, here using Sligo-style Irish ornamentation, is common throughout the British Isles, ex-Celtic lands and in the the Celtic diaspora, e.g., in OT, bluegrass and Canadian fiddle music. This is a boogie tune I put down in guitarist Bob Harris's recording studio. (Bob toured with Vassar Clements for years.) We played through it a few times, then just went for it. We might have used a fade out at the end, which was the plan, but we went with the trainwreck ending for a laugh! It shows that this was a live "take", not a big production. I use some horn-section backing ideas that I got from R&B, otherwise it's basically boogie-blues music. That's me singing with Maura McCabe on harmony.

The stately and popular march used by the 7th Cavalry Regiment going back to General Custer is also a traditional Limerick jig. At a traditional session, it could lead into another tune, which is why it seems to be hanging in the air at the end. This traditional Scottish strathspey, similar to a slow hornpipe but using the "Scots snap" (reverse dotted pairs), survives in the Celtic diaspora of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. The "Scots snap" - a sixteenth note followed by a dotted eighth note - is a kind of rhythmic accent that reflects the rhythm of Scots-Gaelic as spoken. Gabriel Donohue adds some tasteful piano accompaniment in the Cape Breton tradition. An unaccompanied (naked) rendition of the three-part Irish jig in D Mixolydian/D Major. I use a lot of fretting-hand techniques to play single and double-grace notes (single-cuts and double-cuts) before main melody notes, embellishment ideas I got from listening to "cranning" technique on the uilleann pipes.

These are three of my favourite hornpipes, with triplets flying everywhere, especially on The Rights of Man. Robbie Walsh plays amazing bodhran - you can hear why he became the 2008 All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil Champion. Gabriel Donohue improvises on piano in grand Irish style. This is a bouncy medley played at a fairly fast tempo. My first composition on banjo, a hornpipe from the Celtic Diaspora, came to me 30 years ago. I recorded it five years later for my first CD, Bucket of Bees (released in 1991). Personnel: Patricia Bradaigh, bodhrán; Todd Collins, mandolin; me, Stelling Whitestar banjo; Kenny Kosek, piano/fiddle; Walt Michael, hammered dulcimer; William Garrett, engineer. This track blends the sound of New England and Ireland, and finds the ubiquitous Kenny Kosek drifting, in his words, "somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean."

Here is a straightforward setting using Double D tuning (Double C-Capo II) for 'New Five Cents', the Old Time reel that goes under interchangeable titles. The titles create confusion since there are two main branches in Old Time and further regional, local and bluegrass variants. The A Part is pretty close in most versions with one noticeable variation – either dipping down (as I do here) to an A-note or rising up to F# in the second and sixth measures. This variation is found in both Old Time and Bluegrass versions and a G chord is sometimes played in these spots. It’s in the B Part (fifth and sixth measures) where the melodic contour branches in one of two directions – either dipping down from the fifth (A) to the tonic (D)/D chord, or, as Paul Warren played it (New Five Cents), using a G-note double-stop with a B-note)/G chord, then up to an A-note/A chord (as I do here) and moving upwards happily in major second intervals. Many, but not all, Old Time versions (‘New Five Cents’, ‘Ruffled Drawers’ or ‘Buffalo Nickel’) tend to keep dipping down to the low D-note/D chord and use fewer chords than Bluegrass versions which are based on Paul Warren’s version.

Traditional Welsh hornpipe related to the Scottish Jack a' Tar (Jacky Tar), a distant Celtic cousin to the Irish hornpipe, The Cuckoo's Nest. This type of Welsh hornpipe has more drive than bounce (swing). Other Welsh hornpipes swing more. This tune features Gabriel Donohue on guitar and Robbie Walsh on bodhran. This is an auld Carolan tune that makes a lovely banjo tune, played harp-legato style, with notes blending into each other. The cláirseach (pronounced CLAR-shock) or clàrsach (Scottish) or Gaelic harp was tuned diatonically and had metal wire for strings, usually made of brass, silver, gold or a silver-gold alloy! Backing on nylon-string guitar is Gabriel Donohue, from Athenry, Co. Galway, who is a savvy tune accompanist who performed in the original Riverdance and has played with The Chieftains, Joanie Madden, Eileen Ivers as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra. The latter organization likes to transcribe (score) his guitar accompaniments, though he always makes them up as he goes. We recorded this in his studio in Connecticut in 98 degree heat. Notice the darker muted tone of the banjo, which was achieved with a metal violin mute and a heavy walnut bridge - an 11/16th Sampson, standard spaced, which I use on my SwallowTail for certain recording projects. Okay, here's the second version of New Five Cents, which I'm calling 'Ruffled Drawers' (New Five Cents) to distinguish it (for convenience) from the bluegrassy version recorded prior to this. I also added bass notes to distinguish this (Ruffled Drawers) from the previous tune (New Five Cents). Here the melody in the B-Part keeps going back to the low D-note (tonic), which exerts a strong gravitational force on the melodic contour. Again, the titles are interchangeable, so don't get hung up on titles. (A lesson that I've learned from Irish music: a tune like 'Toss the Feathers' can mean many different tunes, same as 'Munster Buttermilk', and on and on. Titles don't reveal how a melody actually goes, and there can be variants or branches of a melody, or entirely different melodies using the same title, or the same melody using different titles.)
