Allowing myself to get all jazzy and crazy with June Apple, taking it wherever I want to go. Yes, it's over the top. Yes, it's sloppy. Hopefully it's also sort of fun and different and enjoyable in some fashion.

just a quick recording of Arkansas Traveler recorded directly on my iPad using the built-in mic and the Garage Band app. The tune is being played on my Will Fielding Catamount, tuned fCFCD.

An attempt at working some clawhammer banjo in to an old jazz setting. Me on banjo, uke and clarinet. Banjo is a Chuck Lee tubaphone, tuned to standard G tuning.

a recording from 2006 or so... if I recall correctly it is a Lee custom banjo with Whyte Laydie tone ring/bracket band, tuned to double-D, and a Bourgeois Banjo Killer slope shouldered dreadnaught, both played by me.

just another older recording of me goofing off with C.o.H. in different tunings. This one, if I'm not much mistaken, is in eBEBD.

Very much a work in process, this is one of my favorite tunes. I had heard it played, but the version I learned it from was actually titled Good Axe Elve, and was performed by Brad Leftwich. I'm playing a custom Ramsey Electric tuned to double D.

a duet [?] of sorts with Tom Berghan and Mark Johnson. All kinds of things going on, mostly Mark on clawhammer and uke, Tom on tenor and guitar. We threw in the kitchen sink. Key of D.

Here's my take on this classic from the fiddling of Henry Reed. I'm playing it in the key of G (G modal tuning) on my Lee Tubaphone, and accompanying myself with a guitar. I'm also using this recording to help me launch my new website dropthumb.com. I'd love it if you stopped by the site sometime for a visit.

a quick version of Flannery's Dream in A, played on a Cedar Mountain D model banjo. This version pairs a bit of John Hartford's A part with Santford Kelly's B part, though I'm not sure I ever get that B part right, or if Santford ever played it the same way twice.

An original composition named after the Hangout's own Paul Roberts. He once posted an inspiring story about having young students take instruments and go off on their own to try to make music with them (as opposed to starting by having them learn the "right" way to do it). I sympathize with this approach and was moved by the story. I can't honestly claim to compose these tunes about a topic, but I can at least name them in honor of things that seem fitting. So this one is named "Hats" in honor of Paul (he has awesome hats). Recorded on a Fielding custom made Whyte Laydie tone ringed banjo, tuned something like open D.

My arrangement of this lovely New England tune, played on a Cedar Mountain D model banjo, tuned aFACF (f#DF#AD capo 3) to put it in its correct key. I'm accompanied by myself on uke.
