Somewhere south of G, just goofing off with this tune on my just acquired Tubaphone with Ramsey neck.

from John Salyer of Kentucky, a fun little 3-part tune in G. played on my Lee custom Tubaphone tuned to standard G. a little bit of lousy accompaniment from myself on guitar just to fill it out some...

another take on this tune, this time tuned aAEAC#, with a uke along for the backup. Here it's in the key of A, only because trying to reach G in that tuning turned the strings to a sloppy mess!

A bit of a jumbled mess of multi-track recording here... a mix of 2-finger thumb lead picking, some clawhammer on a gourd banjo, a touch of uke and my awkward voice creaking away. I love this song, and always get a giggle out of picturing a happy, grinning family rootin' out, skinning and frying up some groundhogs.

Full name: Old Yeller Dog Came Trottin Through the Meetinghouse. Learned from the fiddling of Rayna Gellert. Key of F, banjo tuned fCFCD. Played on a custom Will Fielding banjo with Whyte Laydie tonering. There is some guitar accompaniment but that came out kind of quiet in the recording... it's also me on guitar.

Just noodling around with this chesnut on my Wunderlich mistrel banjo somewhere south of G. Lost my condenser mic... so this was done in one take with an SM57. Hardly ideal for the task and hand, so apologies if the balance isn't great.

Just an experiment related to a thread about the tuning folks used for Shady Grove. Just picked up my seldom-used fretless, twisted the knobs arbitrarily until it sounded cohesive, and then tried to find Shady Grove. This was admittedly recorded on about the third take so it didn't sound TOO lost and awful, but conversely this was only the third take so forgive any rough edges.

one of my favorites, via John Hartford (from the disc Wild Hog in the Red Brush). this is me, my Fielding custom banjo tuned to G modal, me again on uke, and one more me on guitar.

Jam it on the one. This is just a quick goof off created with Garage Band on the iPad... one track of banjo recorded directly with the internal mic, one track of virtual keyboard in a funky rhythm that reminded me of Stevie Wonder, hence the name.

Original tune I popped out, played on a Will Fielding Rooster banjo, tuned something ilke ebBbFAbC. I'm never sure how to name original tunes, but was just speaking with a friend about some upland game birds, thus it became The Covey.

I could hear this version in my noggin but it took me awhile to get my fingers to go along with it. It's still a work in process, but hopefully a little bit enjoyable as it stands. Tuned to A modal, played on a Lee Custom Whyte Laydie named Trogdor.

Also known as Stoney Point, Wild Horses, Wild Horses at Stoney Point, among a pile of other names. This recording features me on clawhammer banjo, me on uke, and my good pal Sean McCue on bass (which apparently doesn't really show up on this recording unless you use headphones or a subwoofer). I'm playing a Mike Ramsey-made copy of the "Fairbanks Family Banjo", tuned something like gEADE. This recording was the kernel on which my pal Tom Berghan built a masterful version of this tune by adding in soprano banjo, bass banjo, percussion and the like. The transformation this recording goes through in his hands is remarkable, and quite beautiful. It can be heard on his music page under the name Stoney Point. Finally, I've added a tab of this version of the tune to the BHO tab archives.
