I've been playing since around 1991. Grew up hearing my Dad, who is an old-time banjoist, play around the house. Realized those tunes didn't suck so bad in my late high school years. I've been playing clawhammer ever since, along with fingerstyle guitar, which actually took the front seat until a little over a year ago. Got tired of explaining to people that I don't play bluegrass banjo, so that's when I decided to give it a whirl. I was already playing fingerstyle on the banjo anyway, so it seemed a natural transition to give some of them new-fangled bluegrass idears a chance. It's really caught aholda me, thanks in a large part to the community here on the Hideout. I don't post much, but I do read a bit, which has been very helpful. I live in Portland, Maine. I'm a painter and a high school art teacher (in that order) and maintain a studio with my brother Thaniel with whom I'm also in a band, Matt Meyer and the Gumption Junction.
