My family and I are heading down to SW VA for Thanksgiving with my in-laws. This is one of our favorite trips of the year. I love spending time with my in-laws. And they live in the town where I went to college. Being there just fills me with good memories. We are actually having the Thanksgiving meal on Friday to accommodate some other family and friends who are coming. Saturday will be a big day for us too. We are going to Upper East TN to visit a cousin of mine. He's lending me one of his clarinet. I played both clarinet and tenor saxophone throughout Junior High and Senior High. So, in addition to taking up the banjo, I also hope to resume the clarinet. I love Big Band/Swing music. It has some mean clarinet solos. After visiting with my cousin, we are going to Scott County, VA to visit the family farm. It's 130 acres and is right next to the Clinch River. Then we will visit some friends, and also my aunt. Then the day will end up at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, VA for an evening of old time and bluegrass music. All in all, a perfect ending to a perfect day. I can't wait.
I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. This past year has not been easy health-wise. But I have great doctors who have helped me bounce back. I'm still not near 100%, but I am grateful for where I am. I'm also thankful for a loving wife and five incredible children. They are such a blessing to my life. And I am grateful for music. Especially on the not-so-good days, music lifts me up. The thought of taking up the banjo and clarinet fills me with joy.
I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. May it be filled with good food, loving family, and the sounds of joyful music.
Peace,
Steve

I grew up in Kingsport, TN. I was born and raised with bluegrass in my blood. Speaking of blood, I am fourth cousins with the Carter Family (A.P. and Eck specifically). I grew up going to the Carter Family Fold on Saturday nights. Now I live in Richmond, VA, but I haven't forgotten my roots. After a 30 year hiatus, I am taking up the banjo again.
