Head Tension

From pappy c on 6/20/2016 8:29:18 PM

After owning my VRBG for just over a year now,I believe it just keeps getting better. I thought it still had a bit more to give so I had a friend check the head tension with a drum dial. It sounded good but I thought it might do even better with a bit of tightening .. The head was at about 88 on the dial, raised it to 92 and wow! It became a monster. There was an incredible difference. I have friend that owns a few pre-war Gibson and it can definitely match them in tone. I have played them side by side. 1933,1934,1936 all three all original . They are special but my Huber will match them in tone. Could not be happier.

That is great, it's so cool to find the sweet spot where the banjo just comes alive. I have two Hubers, mahogany, one vintage and one true tone, with the head tension around 90 on the drum dial, which to my ear is somewhere in between G# and A. I would have to agree that the sound is just about as good as I've heard from any banjo. Dave

No greater feeling than finding the sweet spot on your banjo. I haven't been able to sit my huber down since the day I found mine. The more years I put on it the better it seems to sound. Congrats on getting THAT sound we all love.

Mine was set at G# when I got it and I like to keep it there. (a little over 90 on the drum dial)
Hubers are AWESOME banjos!

Getting that perfect head tension is a big deal. I've had issues when it gets too loose and sometimes even when I cranked it too tight... dialing in the perfect levels makes such a difference

Glad to hear that VRBG is sounding great
