Truetone Strings.

From Chris Cooper on 2/25/2011 2:17:52 PM

Has anyone tried Huber's "Truetone" strings?

How did they suit you?

Has anyone switched to them exclusively? If so what did you use previously?

I use Truetone strings on my Lexington and it sounds amazing. I'll never go back to the other brands I used to buy (Gibson Earl Scruggs or D'Adario med. light)

What do the Truetones cost? I assume they are only available through Huber?

$4 /set - huberbanjos.com/accessories/strings/

You do have to buy them in sets of five though.

Chris Cooper says:

Make that a minimum order of 6 sets.

Plus $105.00 Postage!

That is not a type error! $105.00!

Are they only one gauge, or is there a choice? AT $105 I would guess one would have a choice. :>).

Just one gauge. .010, .011, .0125, .020, .010

They are $4.00 per set.

I've got a set that I'm not using that I can send you if you want to just try them out.

Thanks Tony, that is very kind but I wouldn't dream of putting you to such trouble.

Besides after more thought and consideration I think maybe that .0125 gauge 3rd would be waaaaaaaayyyyyy to light for my liking. I use a .013 3rd at the moment and if anything that is slightly too light.

Do they not feel imbalanced being so light in the centre?

Especially with those .010's on the outside.

Hey guys, I have to add that my new Huber arrived with Truetone strings and it sounds that friggin good, I doubt whether I will ever try another brand!!

The reason Steve uses the gauges he does is because they get the best tone and are very easy to play. JD actually uses the same gauges on his stage set. I used almost med. before these and I'll never change back. Give them a try and see if they don't sound better.

The 12.5 third strings that come with the Truetone set is a little too light. The string is too thin for my finger to grab it for a good pull-off, making my pull-offs sound more like slides...but, I have found that the #20 4th string is essential for the sound. Anything bigger looses the growl for me. The #10 and #11 are neither here nor there in my opinion.
