From banjojake123 on 3/2/2014 7:21:04 PM

I was thinking of purchasing a vintage flathead tone ring and wandering if anyone could give me some feedback on this tone ring.. Thanks in advance...

I have one in my banjo and love it. I got mine used from Steve with the rim and flange. Steve Huber has a cd called Team Flathead that showcases the vintage ring.

The vintage ring is great, very open and clear sounding with reasonably quick decay of overtones, but more sustain than the HR30. It does very much depend on the rim you're putting it on though.. I have a Huber Lancaster with a vintage rim/ring combo and love it's deep open tone, it's very even all the way up the neck with plenty of bottom end growl and top end bells. I also have VRB75 (mahogany), which is great too, but no better than the Lancaster with the vintage pot, just different.

I had a Lancaster with a vintage ring. I have played several prewars with Huber Vintage rings that were killer. I have a Truetone with a HR30 and a HR30 in my 38' TB which I love. I agree with dpeters, the HR30's have a quicker decay and are really good. I think a whole lot of the tone you get depends on the rim you have,(age/quality). Steve's engineered rims are really good too. About as good as you can get without buyin an old prewar. I haven't did much banjo or tone ring swapping for a couple of years now. Been really happy with the two I have right now. EE
