Re-fretting

From dpeters on 7/2/2012 3:56:08 PM

I'd really appreciate you guys giving me some advice on re-fretting my Huber Lancaster.. It'll be done professionally and probably with stainless, what should I look out for?

Yes I had a Huber done with stainless steel frets and hated it. Added a slight zing and hardness to the tone that i hated. I eventually sold the banjo. Even thought of getting nickel silver frets put back in.

The guy to go to for a huber refret or any banjo in my opinion is Robin Smith he is the man and will put the same sized wire factory spec wire. He wont try to talk you into something you dont want.

I had him refret a huber of mine a few years ago he did a great job and he is really good a pulling out the old old frets without chewing up your fingerboard. He was recommended to me by Arthur hatfield.

You need to be very picky who does it there is a few guys out there who pull frets and chip fingerboard badly so they go to sanding down the fretboard to get it looking good again then your inlays are paper thin.

I would take mine to Steve. Who better to re fret it than the guy who built it. He re fretted a Gibson for me a while back and did a great job. As said above Robin Smith is great to.

Steve used to get Robin to do his refret work in the past. But I am sure you will be in good hands with the huber shop also.
