I wonder if any owners of the new VRB3 TT model could tell me the dimensions of the neck/fingerboard. i.e width at nut, 12th and 22nd fret?
I read that the Huber banjos have a narrow fingerboard and wondered what the actual dimensions are.
I notice that they offer an option of a slightly wider board but would like to know the standard width. I can't see this info on the Huber website.
I am thinking about selling some vintage stuff and maybe treating myself to a new Huber.
Lastly, any Hubers for sale in the UK? I understand that Frets Old and New has now closed so options appear to be limited at the moment.

Hopefully someone will chime in. I've got a 2008 custom Lancaster that's probably got a similar profile and I'll measure that for you tonight, but it might be best to touch base with someone at Huber banjos to make sure you're getting the correct info

I have a VRB3, its not a TT. Pic's are on my home page. The standard Huber neck on it measures, @ the nut=1-13/64th or 30.83mm. @ 12th Fret= 1-3/4 or 44.73mm, @22nd Fret, 1-57/64th or 48.18mm. I was told by Jim a Huber Banjos that the wider necks were 1/32" wider at the nut. That doesn't seem like a lot but I hear its noticable when you play it. Although I played Sammy Shelors personal Huber a couple of years ago and didn't really pay that much attention to it at the time. Guess that could have been the excitement of sitting with Sammy though. HA HA. I think I was also told that the wide necks were only wider down to the fifth fret and then standard past that. You can ask some others but I think that is correct. If I can be of more help let me know. Elston

I also meant to ask about the neck profile.
I wondered if the Huber neck was very 'chunky'.
I have an early Stelling Staghorn with a wonderful neck profile. Very nice fingerboard width and quite a shallow profile (front to back).

I had a Lancaster before the Vintage. We can wait and see what Banjov1 says, but I think they are gonna be close if not the same.I think they are all modeled after Steve's Prewar banjo. I have owned two Stelling's, and liked the way they played. I cant say the Huber's are like the Stellings, I think there probably is a slight difference, but the Huber necks are not chunky. I dont like chunky necks either. I may have the measurements on my Stelling neck written down. I have compared them before. Ill have to check. I like the feel of my Huber neck. Frank Neat is one of the most sought after neck builders and that is what I put on my Prewar TB1 last year. Neat and Huber to me are pretty close in feel.

I tried measuring my neck tonight and although I'm not sure my measuring is as precise as double E's, I think my measurements are the same. I had a hard time getting past increments of 1/32. So I came up with....
nut - 1-7/32
12th - 1-3/4
22nd - 1-29/32
I've played a lot of Hubers over the past couple years and I have yet to play what feels like a chunky neck. I've played a Stelling or two and jumped back to my custom Lancaster and didn't notice it feeling bigger. The only time I ever noticed a significant difference in neck size was after playing an Ode from the 60s with an extremely thin neck.
I feel like I'd play better with a wider neck and at one point was trying to get one of the Shelor models. But that's primarily because of my thicker fingers and the hope that I'd play cleaner with more space. I still really like the feel of my neck as it is

I prefer a wider neck but also nothing too deep.
That's why I always refer back to my Stelling for almost ideal dimensions.
I'm not keen on slim necks for the same 'thick fingers' reason.
I'm hoping to try a Huber out at one of the UK festivals this summer, starting next week at the North Wales Festival.
Any Huber owners going???

One of the things I noticed when I first got my Huber was that the fingerboard was slightly narrower than the banjos I'd played before, you can pretty much guarantee that the dimentions will be the same as or a mean average of the pre war Gibson. Steve pays real close attention to detail on these things.

Secondly the neck profile on my Lancaster is certainly not chunky, it's not super slim either. It's tough to explain. I guess, for me at least, they're just right. Get in touch if you'd like to try out my Huber at any time Alan. It's the only one I know of in the country which is unmolested, completely original, well maintained and set up to Steve Huber's spec. You'd be more than welcome any time.
