Steve describes his necks as 'slightly thinner' than most. I have been playing a Lexington with this 'slightly thinner' neck since '04, and my fingers STILL seem to get cramped--a little more space on the fingerboard seems like a good thing to me. I called Huber to talk about the wider neck, and I was told it is 1/32" wider than their standard! Does anyone have the wider neck...and is it really only 1/32" wider? The fella on the phone seemed pretty sure about it, but it's hard to imagine 1/32" really making a difference at all.

Haha, I tried Sammy Shelor's banjo a few years ago at a festival, and I can tell you his banjo neck sure felt a lot bigger than 1/32. The wider necks may be only that big, but to my hands, it sure seemed a good deal larger.

I LOVE wider necks. It's only 1/32, but it really feels like additional space. You can definitely feel it when you're doing pull offs.
I wasn't ready to drop 5 grand on a new Huber with custom features when I got mine, but I did have my banjo setup guy expand the spacing on my nut. I sacrifice a little spacing on the outside of the 1 and 5 strings, but you don't really notice it too much. But I think it really helps my "fat fingers" feel like they're a little skinnier

I have thought of doing something like that. I already have trouble when reaching for strings 4 or 5, the thick part of my hand will often touch the 1st string. Do you have this problem? With the wider spacing on the nut, do you also have wider spacing on your bridge?

I don't think I had the issue you're describing. A more typical example of what was happening for me with small nut string spacing is that when I do a 3-2 pulloff on string 3, my middle or index finger would usually hit the 2nd string. With wider necks this doesn't happen that much.
Also, I've got the standard JD Crowe spacing which is already a little wider than normal at the bridge.

Does the wider Crowe bridge spacing affect spacing on the neck at all, or just the spacing for your right hand?

UPDATE: I don't know if anyone else has had this "problem" with Hubers. The neck of my Lexington seemed so narrow, I was really having trouble playing it. Perhaps my neck was more narrow than usual (my Huber is from 2004)....anyway--SOLUTION: A very good Luthier removed my binding from the nut to the 5th fret and replaced it with wider binding. He sanded it smooth into the wood of the neck. Result: my neck is 1/16 wider than before and playing problems solved. The extra 1/16 is amazing. If you know what you're looking for, you can tell the binding is wider, but this is so much better than buying another banjo or another neck. Didn't know if anyone else is struggling with this or just me...but I thought I'd pass it on. For $75, it's a great solution. The Luthier who did this was John Bouling of Note-Able repair in Mt. Airy, NC. I highly recommend him. He knows what he's doing.

If I handed you a banjo with the 1.2375 neck and didn't tell you, you would play it and not want to give it back. Finally an F chord without your fingers on top of each other. Incidentally. Stelling necks have always been this wide from day one. If you ask me the 1.2375 should be the standard.
