I was going through the junk drawer today and ran across my prewar flathead ring Verifyer. This is the real thing and not one of those Taiwanese made knock-offs. This one was made by the company that came out with the original Verifyers, Hoyt-Clagwell and is the very rare "illuminated" model. I thought you guys might want to see the real thing.

Don---I've not seen one of those since I was just a kid, and never thought I'd see one again. My Papaw Kelly's brother, Denver Colorado Kelly had one, and he always brought it with him when he would come back East to visit. Us kids would pester him continually about it. Eventually, sometimes after dinner on the front porch, he'd let us all look at it, but I never got to see it close up. Boy does that bring back memories. ![]()

Does it use batteries, or plug in? This one also looks like a flathead Verifier---have you got the origional archtop adapter?

Don,
No wonder you can't verify a 19 hole, prewar, flat head ring! Look at the threads, you haven't done any routine upkeep in years
Lube the threads with "snake oil" before you screw it next time. Curtis uses
"Satan be Gone Powder" on his and it works great, illuminated or not![]()

Does this model have the ball bearing balancer? I can't tell. I'm kind of new to this collecting thing.
Anyway, how much are you asking for it? There's one on Ebay now with a $500 "Buy it Now", but it looks like a fake.

Why pay $500 when Huber sells a verifier made to exacting specs he got several real prewar verifiers? His are only $295.

Don,
I know your verifyer is far too valuable to loan out. Can BHO members send you prewar flat head rings for verification? How much is the verification fee and will UPS ground be OK?

This is a custom Verifyer with the Zombie brand flux capacitor and hedge waver feature. It even compensates for the 19 hole prewar ring by changing the strobe.

I know it's a flathead verifyer, but does it have the socket for the duplex unit to adapt for 40 hole archtops ?

I saw one of these devices years ago. The guy who was using it also used another piece in conjunction with it. The part shown above, was the part that actually touched the tone ring itself but,he was looking through a special eyeglass that said "VERITAS" on it to be sure.

Don ... i know you are a respected regular here at BHO and i am in no position to challange your claim. However, there is a little known government funded entity which was set up in the early 1950's for the very purpose of authenticating these pre war tone ring verifiers. The agency has become affectionatly known as "TRAVIS" (Tone Ring Authenticity Verifier Inspection Service).
One of the top inspectors happens to be a friend of mine and i have contacted him about your find. He said he will be happy to authenticate your tone ring verifier using the latest technology, a device he called a "TRITT" (Tone Ring Identification Tool Tester).
If you are willing to submit your rare and collectable Hoyt-Clagwell to the scrutiny of an expert i'm sure he will agree to supply you with a signed letter of authenticity. This will certainly silence the doubts of any skeptical BHO members, and as a further benifit you will have written documentation that it is indeed an all original model should you decide to sell it one day. Please contact me (off forum) if you ever have the inclination to sell. Even if this is a floor sweep or a frankenstien, you really are a lucky dog ! Here is a photo of my friend with the geniune TRAVIS TRITT PW tone ring verifier authenticator at his side ...

Don,
I am not taking this lightly at all ! Could you please check your's for the duplex socket, the reason I'm asking is the tonering below. A guy I once met near a dumpster in Michigan gave me documentation showing this tonering was made on Monday, Jan 2, 1933 at about 6:30 am. Yet my verifyer (with duplex unit) gives me inconsistent readouts. I was hoping if your's has adjustable strobe and can even deal with 19 hole rings I might get a better readout for the holes in this one.

Will your "verifyer" have to physically have the tone ring present or will it work from a high quality digital photograph? Or could you send me a high quality digital photo of the verifyer and I will hold my tone ring uo to the screen.

>>>Just print the picture of my Verifyer and glue it to a piece of cardboard.
After the war, they used b&w photo's of the verifyers and cardstock from war bonds. I read about it in the BNL.

This is one "wicked sense of humor" thread....
It has become, IMHO, was of the most creative series of posts ever on the Hangout.
With that being said, does tyour Verifyer have a prewar digital readout tape documenting the following physical characteristics?
1. Lathe grooves per thousandth of an inch
2. Size and locations of burrs left in 19 or 20 holes
3. Depth and location of casting pits compared to Earl's ring.
Don, thanks so much in advance for this information.
Dave.

Hey El dobro Joe Deetz here I need a new spring for mine. You always said you would get this to me when I bought mine off you 15 years ago. Remember I have the style 6v that is illuminated and gold plated I was using it on my 3 and it verified it as a no hole look at this picture and you can see where it raised a small bur in the middle hole due to the weak spring. There was a bit of movment in the hole when it verifyed.

El Dobro - Posted - 10/05/2006: 22:46:43
Joe,
That happened from not using the newer Hoyt-Clagwell "safety-pull" spring for testing. Apparently you used the old "takeyoureyeoutkid" spring that was used on the early Verifyers. For the history buffs out there, Hoyt-Clagwell redesigned the spring after Ralph Nader came out with his expose "Unsafe At Any Note". There was a chapter in the book about the springs flying off the early Verifyers and landing on the neighbor's roof.
The next time I change the screen door, I'll get a spring right out to you.
