Life throws us all hurdles to get over.
A broken leg is no bowl of cherries, but plenty of
better folks than me have been dealt worse hands.

Thanks for your prayers and best wishes.

No sickbay chit for you Leatherneck, we still have a 25 mile hump to go then shower, chow and finally the rack!!! That comment is going to cost me my weekend liberty!! Sorry to hear of your pain and trouble. Your really going to have some serious time to devote to the banjer, some good books and imparting much wisdom to us here on the hangout. I do wish for your full and speedy recovery and I will pray that this becomes a reality sooner than later. Love you brother. Semper Fi.

Hey-- ask your Doc for more effective pain drugs . Hope you heal soon :)  This might be a good time to record a new cd-- while you have to sit & pick banjo anyway ?

Best wishes,  Mary Z Cox

R.D.,

I always enjoy reading your thoughts here on BHO and have always appreciated your mild-mannered demeanor.  Once you get a "leg up" on the inconvenience and discomfort here's hoping that you'll be able to utilize your downtime for some quality playing time.

We're all pullin' for ya!

It strikes me that "R.D. Lunceford Broke His Leg" would be a great name for a CH banjo tune.

Heal quickly, R.D.!

Whoa, no more break dancing for you for awhile! Take care of yourself and play some fine banjo music during your down time.

orangikan - Posted - 06/25/2016:  08:13:28

Let me second the motion that you use this downtime to do some recording! I've been revisiting the Drop Thumb recording and that is some hot, driving rhythm!

Hey Rd--really sorry you broke your leg--but this could be a rainbow on a cloudy day.  This might be the best time to take the Portland busking scene by storm.

Sit out there with your broken leg stuck out--playing your banjo & yes--put out your cds & books & a separate tip jar or can too & write something hilarious on it--maybe

"my wife broke my leg for playing the banjo around the house and she'll break my other leg if I don't come up with the house payment soon."

And if you happen to have a cast on your leg--take multicolored sharpies to let tippers & cd buyers sign their name on your cast. :)

If you have any pals at the local radio or tv station--ask them out to get a little footage & have your wife or kids or a friend take a little video and get it up on social media.

Hey--you could come out of this a rich man--there are tens of dollars to be made here!  And I don't remember how old your daughter is now--but if she's cute and has a figure--have her wear short, shorts & a cleavage top & let her sell the cds & books---I guarantee your sales will double :)

Best wishes,

Mary Z Cox

Thank God for orthopedic surgeons. And as bad as a leg fracture is, at least you will be able play while your leg heals. I'm glad it was not in one of your upper extremities. Mend quickly!

So sorry to hear about your injury RD, I read your posts so frequently I feel like I know you! Take good care, and I hope you can play a whole bunch of banjo while you are on the mend!

I'm sorry to hear this news, R. D.! I hope that you have a speedy and complete recovery and that the pain subsides soon. Ask for good drugs, as pain actually slows healing. I guess you'll have some down time, hopefully to be filled with music as much as possible! All the best to you.

Prayers sent for complete healing and speedy recovery.

Haven't broken a bone, but had a hip replaced.

Back in September 1963, (I was 8), my Dad and uncle were riding horses on our farm. As they were heading up the hill towards the barn Dad's horse suddenly spooked and ran. Before Dad could get the horse under control it ran full speed through a gap in the fence, the saddle slipped, and Dad's right femur was crushed against the end post. He was knocked off and my uncle thought he had been killed. He checked that Dad was still alive and conscious. Dad said that though hurt, he had laughed to himself, for my uncle (who was not "athletically built) ran to  his horse, hit the rump with both hands and landed in the saddle going immediately to full gallop to get help. Roy Rogers couldn't have done it any better.

That broken leg changed the course of the rest of Dad's (and Mom's and our family's) life. But Dad was a positive and happy man who loved life and, like you, had a great perspective. That, and the generosity and support of our family, friends, neighbors, and church saw him (and us) through. Dad's right  leg was about two inches shorter and so he his right shoe, whether a dress shoe or cowboy boot, built up. There is a lot more to the story than this, but the bottom line is I never heard Dad complain. That left a deep impression on me.

Again, best wishes.

That IS a bummer! As the other well wishers have stated, I hope you recover quickly and that the pain goes away as soon as possible. As mentioned, the good news is your banjo playing parts are OK so my advice is go to it, music can ease pain as good as some meds and music, if it becomes addicting... well that's OK too!

Dogfeathers - Posted - 06/26/2016:  13:35:24

RD,

Have not been visiting the BHO much recently so just got the news. Hope you were not heading on stage for a grand banjo performance and a stage hand said "break a leg",  and you took them seriously! All the best and a speedy recovery.

If R.D. had broken his leg playing the banjo, then this would be a "Banjo-Related" subject. But as it stands (or sits, as the case may be), this is not a "Banjo Related" subject.

The obvious remedy for that is for R.D. to get out his banjo and play. Then the thread would become "R.D. Lunceford Broke His Leg, But Continues To Play The Banjo!".

That is a "Banjo-Related" subject!

Get better quickly R.D. - but don't wait until then to play your banjo!
