I'm lucky, my Dad still has his... he's in his 80's...

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/06/2009:  07:54:19

I think my uncle still has his. My dad didn't have his out until he was in his 30s and he sometimes wonders if the dentist who had them pulled did it mostly because he thought someone in their 30s shouldn't have them.

I talked with my folks yesterday. They're back home finally. Dad is feeling good except he had to give up smoking. He can't find his twirly tool and he's very distressed about that.

JackJack - Posted - 12/06/2009:  08:51:52

I've got enough gaps in my teeth to fit another tooth or two.

Glad you dad is feeling better, Ace.

1four5 - Posted - 12/06/2009:  19:24:58

Do you still play that Boston JackJack?

JackJack - Posted - 12/06/2009:  20:16:56

Every day!

I've been clawhammerin' on my Goldtone a bunch. Got it tuned to a open C right now, figuring it all out.

Fun!

1four5 - Posted - 12/07/2009:  02:32:05

I still haven't leanred to claw... someday...

JackJack - Posted - 12/07/2009:  11:18:54

Have you ever checked out Pandora.com? Put an old time band in the que, like the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and listen for awhile. It gave me the motivation to learn clawhammer. Now I want to learn fiddle!

dat - Posted - 12/07/2009:  11:29:53

me, I fiddle around a lot, but would loev to learn how to play one

JackJack - Posted - 12/07/2009:  11:39:40

I don't play a mondoline because my hands feel too big to fret it right. I have a feeling I'm gonna feel the same about the fiddle.

dat - Posted - 12/07/2009:  11:56:40

Ricky Skaggs has some big ol fat sausage fingers and can play the mandoline.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/07/2009:  12:16:24

I read somewhere that you tend to see more guys than women playing mandolin because it requires a lot of hand strength to fret it because of the double strings.

I don't know how true that is or if it's just that you tend to see more guys than women play bluegrass in general. But I had always thought it was kind of odd to see these big hulking guys playing this little tiny instrument.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/07/2009:  12:17:06

I'm going to see Peggy Seeger tonight.

dat - Posted - 12/07/2009:  14:12:04

is she any kin to Bob Seger?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/07/2009:  15:11:00

I don't think so.

She's Pete Seeger's half sister.

Good point! If his sausages can play on those tiny frets, so can mine!

Ace, you go to quit a lot of shows. I haven't seen a live show in a long time, but I'm thinking about going this Thursday night to see Son Volt, or Friday to see Todd Snider. I'm usually in bed by 9 or 10, so it's takes a lot of dedication to wait up late to see an act go on around my bed time.

dat - Posted - 12/07/2009:  15:27:38

there ya go, stay up late, go to a show and learn the mando

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/07/2009:  15:35:27

I have no life, really, outside of going to shows. If I don't go, I sit at home and do nothing. It comes from having no friends.

The thing tonight is free. That's my favorite kind. It's actually going to be half lecture and half performance, I think.

JackJack - Posted - 12/07/2009:  15:36:29

I'll bet I accomplish none of those. All at once!

Just kidding. I'm leaning towards the going to the Son Volt show and sleeping in. Maybe the fiddle instead of mando for next year, but that's it! I'm putting my foot down!

HomeschoolBanjoPlayer - Posted - 12/07/2009:  17:24:49

The mandolin is pretty easy to play! But the fiddle.....

1four5 - Posted - 12/07/2009:  17:43:52

Last live show I went to was the Stones... an evening I will never forget. I can die happy

JackJack - Posted - 12/07/2009:  18:33:24

Let's see.... last live show I went to was, er.... I totally forget! I guess it been way too long.

And that fiddle thing... I thought finger picks on the banjo were hard to get used to, but I did! I figure bowing will be quite the challenge to over come now. I keep thinking about it on and off for a couple years, I think it's a sign. A destiny. I'm already a member on the fiddlehangout.com, that's a start!

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/07/2009:  18:39:02

When I was a kid my best friend played violin and she let my mess around with it a bit. I didn't find the bow to be that challenging, but then I wasn't really trying to play.

JackJack - Posted - 12/07/2009:  18:54:46

Hey! Aren't you gonna be late for the show?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/07/2009:  18:56:26

I'm back.

Peggy Seeger is 74. She doesn't stay up late.

JackJack - Posted - 12/07/2009:  19:11:14

That's the kinda shows I need to go to, back to home before dinner, then to bed. I guess that leaves only kid and grandparent type shows. Hummmmm..........???Who to see. Who to see?

1four5 - Posted - 12/07/2009:  19:25:41

Taylor Swift is coming to our town... her show sold out in 14 minutes. Elton John and Billy Joel are coming next March. To be honest, I really don't know who I'd actually pay to see.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  05:55:09

Robbie does kids shows. I like his song "There's a Carp In The Tub."

dat - Posted - 12/08/2009:  06:50:14

I can't think of anybody I'ld pay to see, I've seen a lot of people play, Waylon, Merl, George Strait, Reba McEntire, Neal McCoy, David Allen Coe, a lot of the older singers, but they were just at the club I was drinking at at the time. I had a good time but don't want to do it again and sure don't want to pay to see somebody when I can buy the album for less money and listen to it a lot longer than the show

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  08:54:35

See, I don't go out drinking so my "going out" urges are satisfied with the concerts. It's the closest thing to being social that I can manage.

dat - Posted - 12/08/2009:  08:56:41

you can go up on the roof and spread out a bunch of seed for the pidgeons

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  10:44:46

I'm scared of heights.

dat - Posted - 12/08/2009:  11:16:49

jest don't get close to the edge, the birds will come in anyway

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  11:48:23

I think I'm more worried about the getting up there than anything.

dat - Posted - 12/08/2009:  14:06:09

don't worry, you can get down fast

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  14:29:50

That's what worries me!

flake - Posted - 12/08/2009:  14:35:36

I've not been able to post for days now. I've just found out the only way I can get through is with the quick reply box.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  14:42:33

So I should call off the search team?

flake - Posted - 12/08/2009:  14:44:16

Yeah. I wouldn't have answered the door anyway.

Thanks for the thought, though. :-)

Not even for the Dallas cheerleaders? Carrying poptarts?

dat - Posted - 12/08/2009:  15:11:58

do they have any beef jerky?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/08/2009:  16:19:25

That was the reserve search party.

1four5 - Posted - 12/09/2009:  02:58:29

why would a cheerleader be carrying poptarts?

dat - Posted - 12/09/2009:  05:47:38

a friend of mine dated a Dallas cheerleader for a while, she was a woman that was very hard to get along with, she was pretty but I don't see how he put up with her as long as he did. goes to show you that looks don't mean that much

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/09/2009:  05:58:18

I don't understand relationships very well at all. There's lots of times when I wonder why a couple stays together--or even got together in the first place.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/09/2009:  12:41:12

Strawberry. With frosting.

JackJack - Posted - 12/09/2009:  12:48:22

I'll pass.

I believe the Dallas cheerleaders already visited Tiger, and look how that turned out!!

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 12/09/2009:  12:56:18

Well, I wouldn't give them golf clubs.

I'll pass. I'm not a big Dallas fan anyway.

They could leave the Pop Tarts, though.

Okay, I thought it over in more detail.... Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, or Pop-Tarts? If I were single, it'd be an easy choice, because..... "we're on a diet".

I guess the cheerleaders can come on over then.
