An uncontrollable AI entity that can travel and hide at will (we already have hackers using our “smart fridges” to send out spam email) will inevitably destroy us. I don’t think there is much of an argument to be made against that.
Unfortunately, we have maniacal megalomaniacs that are willing to risk the destruction of the human race WHILE actively warning us about it.
I would be amazed if we make it a year before an AI bot of our own, or another entity’s making, shuts down large swaths of our power grid at will.
We already have giant segments of the population that believe every AI video they see. The Matrix is almost here.
We’re just polishing brass on the titanic at this point, hopefully the band playing us out has a banjo.

Asimov's Laws of Robotics:
1...A robot cannot harm a human or allow one to come to harm through inaction.
2...A robot must obey human orders unless they conflict with the first law.
3...A robot must protect its own existence unless it conflicts with the first or second law.
Zeroth law:
A robot may not harm humanity or allow it to come to harm through inaction.
A robot meaning the embodiment of AI.
Below is a link to a piece in the New York Times about a meeting between a bunch of theologians and the folks who run Anthropic. Much of their discussion was related to the possibility that the Anthropic chatbot, Claude, could achieve the equivalence of human consciousness. The theologians were quite troubled by that possibility.
I think I know how you can tell when Claude has achieved consciousness equivalent to a human being. When you ask a question, the first word of the first sentence of the response will be the conjunction “so”.
So... the AI our store was expecting arrived and to call it an AI is a bit of an overstatement. It is a scanner on wheels. I will say, it appears to be very efficient. It can scan the entire store within hours. That is a huge improvement. Our old handheld scanners, IF and WHEN they felt like working were slow and tedious. There were even areas of the store where they would not work at all because they were too far away from the main computer. So, yes, we are thrilled to have technology that actually works. So far.
Apparently, these scanners have been around awhile and have a following? One can buy merchandise, such as toy AI scanner for the grandkids. One can also buy the "family photo" of this AI. Half the store believes the AI is a female, and the other half believes it is a male. I believe it is a scanner. It doesn't wear a skirt, but even if it did, I wouldn't lift it to see. :0) It is tempting to draw some lipstick on it, and maybe stick a bow on it's top, but I think I might get in trouble for that.
If something is in its way, it will chirp to "politely" get attention. If the thing doesn't move, it will sometimes go around it and sometime continue to chirp. Once, it got rather hot and bothered over some empty shopping carts that were in its way. It spun in circles and flashed red lights. When that still didn't do the trick, it gave up, turned around and went the other way.
Every forum and social media I'm on has an AI discussion pages long going. From them I have concluded that there is good AI, bad AI, and then there is that sneaky nefarious AI out to git us. So I think we need to some how determine the bad apples and not paint all AI as evil. It is like anything, one bad apple doesn't define the whole basket full.
I'm with mander on the robot thing at Lowes that will walk me around the store and help me find more stuff to buy. He/she is fun.

Wow! That is amazing! Better than the humans that work there. I stopped shopping at Lowes because I would ask, "Where is..." and the human being would answer, "look it up on your phone." I would explain, I don't have a phone. And they would tell me, "Go home and buy it on line." Are you saying you don't have it in store? No, I'm saying go look for yourself. Wow! Humans that can be replaced by a machine, should be. :0)

Hot Dang! Are you single? :0)
Got my first taste of talking to an AI "person" this morning. Went to renew my Sirius account and had to go through questions and answers to a non-person?? before I could get anything done. Will admit that "she" was pretty knowldgeable and easy to understand and even ask questions to which she answered as though she understood and knew what I was asking.
Finally got to a live person and got the renewal finished in a few minutes.
Would rather talk to someone live.
