Thanks Al, but you don't want to give away too much of the credit. Your whole set-up is new to me. While I can find my way around a basic kitchen, my expertise [cough, hack, cough] with outdoor cooking* begins and ends with weenies over a campfire.
* - but that's just the cooking part ... I can hold my own when it comes to the eating end of it. ![]()

The chain is the hight adjustment..
It appears you're doing fine without my advice [cough, hack, cough], but would an "S"-hook at the bottom end of the chain be a worthwhile idea? ... Could then take the skewer out while leaving the chain in position? I.e. adjust the height of the skewer via the chain only at the spike (?) in the top frame?
[But, but, but, bear in mind, mine is not the voice of experience.
]
Edit: Ooops!! .... disregard ^^ ... on closer examination of your last pic, I see you're a few steps ahead of me.... I see your method does allow for removal AND it prevents unwanted rotation of the skewer. [Don't mind me ..... it'll pass.]

Funny thing Owen..
Great minds think alike.. :0)
While you were posting i was lookin fer a repair link to do that very thing..
I'll post a pic later.. :0)
I dunno Al, that chain looks like you borrowed (?) it from one of your jobsites.
For the "S" hook, what I was thinking was one of the m-a-n-y I've removed from wonky tarp straps and are now taking up space on my workbench.
But IF you think some of my ideas have merit, here's one I'm sure you can adopt/adapt: I had made a cradle from broken hockey sticks for our first-born. However the bedroom in our first house didn't have a lot of space along side the bed.... just enuff for the cradle. For night-time snacks I'd pass our daughter over to my wife, and when nursing was done, she'd hand her back. I'd tuck her in, but had a shoestring [with a loop for my finger] attached to the cradle ... everybody was covered and I could still rock her back to sleep. I think I'd be reconnoitering about some remote control between the stove and my recliner. ![]()
