She's more than just a pretty face.
Our gal discussing the environment in Toronto, expressing her frustration with some of the slings and arrows directed at the Leafs, including some by a former player who's now doing rather well in Lost Wages. Agree or not, she makes a good argument.
Caution: some salty language was used.
Oh, and seeing as how this post jumped the thread to the next page, the above link will serve as our requisite JR content for this string.

Mr Marner is having a ball being away from the so-called “hockey centre” of Canada

The "hockey centre" of Canada?
I thought it was the hockey centre of the whole freaking world. At least, that's what they've been trying to tell me ever since I was old enough to realize that skates hurt when you put them on the wrong feet, and REALLY hurt when you accidentally kick the blades whilst on your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and they were on the floor because back then they were new and you were so proud of them that you wanted to admire them until you nodded off, and you had no real concept of how bad they're ultimately going to smell.
And all of the lessons in this (almost entirely true) story were learned many, many, many decades ago.
The NHL Head Office used to be in Montreal,, Toronto never really liked that,, but then they won 4 Cups in the ‘60’s to soothe bruised egos, but alas, the NHL office moved to ,,,,gasp,,,, New York City. However, the Canadian media centre became Toronto and Leaf-dom reigned somewhat supreme,,, oh, did someone say their last Cup win was in 1967….? Oh those poor tortured souls, enduring the Ballard years, mucking along just barely above mediocrity, and now the worst humiliation of all- a near-hometown star shuffles off to Nevada, while his semi-Mexican pal tries valiantly to lead a crumbling hockey culture.

Aye. L'Hockey is no longer solely the possession of scions of farmhands and trappers hailing from Yon Frozen North. Personally, I think the game is far better off as a result.
eagleisland Smile when you say that, pardner,,,, the hallowed NHL up here was at one time managed by a guy who was a Judge at the Nuremberg Trials - Clarence Campbell. And one mustn’t forget good ole Lord Stanley, Canada’s Governor General in the 1890’s who donated the Cup ,, even his sons were out thrashing opponents on the icy plains around Ottawa.
"Stronger marketing, broadcast and executive growth" .... all with the players' and fans' well-being in mind, no doubt. ![]()
How and by who was the actual decision made to switch from amateur to pro and from Canada to NHL? Did somebody ask [and ostensibly get permission], or did it "just happen"? [Inquiring minds want to know ... but at least one is too lazy to do his own look-it-up.]
Go, Yankees, Go!!

Wikipedia has a reasonable history of it. Bottom line is that there were other professional leagues prior to the NHL; the NHL emerged after the Ontario-based National Hockey Association (a pro league) went Tango Uniform. It was initially exclusively Canadian. That changed in 1924, when my Broons became the first US-based franchise. The League intentionally decided to add American cities. Gary Bettman isn't the first league honcho to know a good market when he sees one.

ESPN reported: "The state offered the Bears up to $1 billion in incentives to relocate to the site in Hammond." I dunno just how $1B fits into the grand scheme, but I suppose it qualifies as a "financial reason." [Fwiw, I assume "the state" was Indiana, not Illinois.

no politics, pls. (hope I'm not treading on thin ice...., I did play a lot of river hockey growing up)

I think of Gordy* Howe's legacy every time I go up/down Hwy. #16 south of Saskatoon .... no signage on 16, but maybe there's something on Hwy. 11 ..... we r-a-r-e-l-y go that way ... might have to make a detour.
* Yes, Gordy ... at least on my Topps card from 1960ish.

Kind of a passive/dispassionate/?? interest, though I gotta admit it's kinda nice to see a ig-bay ik-pray like Tortorella NOT win it.
I thought last night was actually a bit of a let-down. Seemed like Vegas had no answers. The signs were starting to show in Game 5, but last night they just seemed worn down. An entertaining game, but not as much of a thriller as I'd hoped for (and I actually hoped this series would be determined in Game 7 double overtime).
I know Torts is controversial. I happen to like the guy for a bunch of reasons. But I had to come around, ultimately, to rooting for the 'Canes simply because of Old Friends.
One being Taylor Hall, who spent the better part of three seasons as a very productive member of my Broons and who got traded to Chicago for a bag of pucks in a salary cap dump. Fine player, good guy, and was always a workhorse - delighted to see his name on the Cup.
And then there's Brandon Bussi. Whatever else you might say about Boston's player development (and there's plenty to say) Boston has long displayed a knack for identifying and developing excellent goalies. I saw Bussi play a number of times in Providence - he and Michael DiPietro were a very impressive tandem. DiPietro outplayed Bussi in training camp (he went on to be the most successful goalie in the AHL this season) and Bussi got waived. Florida picked him up, then waived him again, and Carolina grabbed him as a third backup.
He got his chance midseason and started kicking butt, going 31-6-2 in the regular season, and now he gets his name on the Cup. I love it for the kid.
A month or two ago, Bussi signed a two-year extension at a $1.9mm AAV. I thought then that he was leaving money on the table. Think that even more now.
Controversy suits me just fine. What leaves me grouchy is that seemingly his go-to for getting his jollies is embarrassing / running somebody else down.
I only watch a tiny fraction of the analysis / commentary / etc. that the networks foist on us, so in that all I see is ^^, maybe my viewpoint is skewed??
Torts used to be on a TSN panel during intermissions when he was between coaching jobs. There was this inane “game” the producers cooked up , some kind of guessing game, can’t quite remember. Torts refused to play, said it was stupid ,, on live television…lol. He gets ticked off easily as if there's simmering anger just under the surface; trouble is he often carries that over into constantly criticizing his players.

My son and grandsons, from Atlanta, and I are Cane's fans and of course were delighted in the Cup finals. I pretty much felt like LV was going to be toast after their last game and it pretty much played itself out. It's hard to score when you don't get any shots and there was a long time frame when they had zero shots ...... thinking like 16 minutes, but that might be wrong. I never post about hockey but enjoy reading posts from you guys that really know what you are talking about.
