I learned this from Mike Seeger last summer. The tuning is what I call "Charlie Poole Tuning," but it might actually be called "Classical C Tuning." Anyway, it's gCGBD.

Lovely version. I really admire that 3-finger picking.

Fantastic - I love it! The melody is clearly evident and foremost, and the filler notes are eminently complimentary to the melody, audibly interesting without eclipsing the melody. Thanks for posting this.

You're welcome! Thanks for listening and for posting such great feedback. I wish I could take credit for the arrangement, but it's Sam McGee's.

This is the way "Needlecase" should be! I Which banjo do you play on this tune?

Why the Kasuga, of course! Thanks Bosco

Go Isaac! You must come here for the Charlie Poole fest. sometime. It's the most old-time 3-finger players you'll ever see in one place at one time. (it might take 2 hands to count 'em!)

I'd love to make it, but those early to mid-June festivals are always taking place when I'm wrapping up the school year. I'll have to take a year off some time just to make Mt. Airy!

Really pretty! I compared the way I play it to the way you play it and there's been some tune drift; you are closer to Sam McGee than I am! Walt Koken, who listened to me play it, told me I have key details of the melody wrong, which was prompted me to go back to Sam's original recording) I REALLY like what you did! Second Gailg's comments-- rearrange your life (easy for me to say) and come to the Poole festival!

You're channeling Sam McGee with this one. Excellent picking.

I love this arrangement! I came to my own 3-finger version of Needle Case via Carroll Best's "fiddle style" & it has similarities, but there are lots of real pretty embellishments I can now incorporate from this one - thanks Isaac.
