I'm a clawhammer player, but lately I've been obsessed with Charlie Poole, Frank Jenkins, and Pete Peterson's banjo playing. Now I just worked up this arrangement yesterday and recorded today so it's definately a little rough and slow, but isn't it a pretty banjo tune? Gotta love the old-time three finger!

Here I am learning a tune on the fly (though I know I've heard it before). Bruce Molsky and Bosco playing fiddle. 4-4-08 in Kyoto.

I learned this from Mike Seeger last summer. The tuning is what I call "Charlie Poole Tuning," but it might actually be called "Classical C Tuning." Anyway, it's gCGBD.

Jimmy Triplett is our source for this one. Not sure where he got it, but it's very likely a West Virginia tune.

This is originally from Sherman Gore's fiddling. I got it off of a recording of Jimmy Triplett. I'm playing my Dobson, with fresh nylgut strings. Sorry, the recording's a little muddy.

I started messing around with this eCGCD tuning and came up with this arrangement over the weekend. I'm pretty sure that I heard Paul Brown play something like this a few years ago, but I don't have the recording anymore so I'm not sure. Anyway, it's a pretty tuning, don't you think?

I love the story behind this song. A soldier comes home from the civil war and decides to surprise his wife who's out doing the wash. He walks into the house and grabs his fiddle from the wall when he notices a little baby girl. So he played this tune on the spot. This is from a live show OTC played last weekend at a tiny bar in Nishinomiya, Japan. Bosco on fiddle, Heja on Uke, me on fretless, and crowd on occasional stomp.
