This was recorded by Anne and Bucky Gilbert on August 17, 1963 at Geroge Pegram's home in Union Grove, NC. They had visited to do a home recording, but found the local minister visiting George and he would only sing hymns while the minister was there. For those of you who knew George, you know he needed serious salvation after some of those fiddlers convention escapades!

This recording was made for the Libary of Congress by Alan Lomax in Galax, Virginia in 1941. Raymond Swinney was 15 years old and can be documented playing like this on his farm in a remote part of Grayson County Virginia for several years before this recording was made....before Scruggs. Swinney taught both Larry Richardson and Ted Lundy to play 3-finger style.

This performance was recorded at the Galax Fiddlers Convention in 1964. Pegram calls the tune 'The Old Fox Chase' here, but also called it 'Old Rattler' on other recordings. For those of you who never saw George, you really can't appreciate the overall visual effect of George howling at the moon with his banjo sticking straight up in the air. It was nothing short of spell binding. In this outing, the microphone stand kept slipping down and George went right down with it...winding up nearly lying on the stage..oh how I wish someone had filmed it!
