This recording was made for the Libary of Congress by Alan Lomax in Galax, Virginia in 1941. Raymond Swinney was 15 years old and can be documented playing like this on his farm in a remote part of Grayson County Virginia for several years before this recording was made....before Scruggs. Swinney taught both Larry Richardson and Ted Lundy to play 3-finger style.

Wonderful picking, solidly within the 3-finger stylings of the era. Perhaps similar to what Charlie Poole might've sounded like if he'd been recorded this late (he died a decade prior). Is this really a 15-year-old singing?! Amazing. In 1941, Earl Scruggs was 17 and probably well on his way to how he sounded in his first recordings as a Blue Grass Boy at age 22; we may not be able to say that this was literally "before Scruggs," but we aren't fortunate to be able to hear Earl's picking in 1941 as we are Raymond's. Great! Thanks.
