I recently received a new Ome Northstar in curly cherry. I have been trying out a few different set-ups in order to optimize the sound. It is a very responsive banjo with a warm tone. Thinking of putting on a skin head to old-timey-fy it a bit more. We'll see....

I finally got around to recording the rest of the parts for this tune. I posted a video of the banjo break, more or less, a while back. All instruments played by me..."Lo-Fi Country Drums" played by Mr. Mac. LOVE those 2 chord tunes! Banjo used: 1934 Fat Rim RB-3 "Ole Trusty"

I've always loved the sound of the Foggy Mt. Banjo album. I thought it would be fun to try to get close to the sound of the recording. So I looked for the most live room I could find and it was.....the bathroom. I recorded this on a Macbook Pro using Garage Band fed by a Blue Snowball Mic. I played all the instruments, overdubbing. I hope you like it.

Maybe he's the guy you see when you drink too much Absinthe. Hail the King. 1925 TB-4 and Martin Guitar join forces. Obviously, I like this tune. A note to all you great Irish Tenor players: I'm just starting out this week. Most of what I'm playing is carried over from fiddle so my technique is a bit wonky and my triplets are pretty lame. It'll take a while to get this sounding like it is supposed to. Any comments on ways to improve would be welcomed.

I've always like this tune for its simplicity of concept. Like many old time fiddle tunes it has a good theme that is ripe for improvisation. I sat down in the morning and drank an espresso while working on this and after a bit, this is the result. Done on my new Ome Northstar .

When I was in my teens my folks bought me a bluegrass album by Jimmy Martin. It was called "Big and Country Instrumentals". I was captivated by the playing and sound of the album. I had listened to Flatt and Scruggs, for the most part and was really surprised to find something else to be mesmerized by. I learned this tune without tuners at first because I didn't even know they existed. Later on I got a pair and incorporated them into this version. This was my first recording with Logic 8 and a new Apogee Duet. I played all the instruments with overdubs (except the drum loop). I think it came out ok. The original version will always be the best.

A pair of jigs that seem to go well together. Frankly, I just wanted the titles to be used in a set...thought it would be cool. I used one of my students' banjos on this recording, a Slingerland Nite Hawk. I like the sound of it.

My friend, Kathy Barwick sent me guitar version of this tune today. I liked it so much I learned it and recorded it today as well...(2-14-10) I'm not as good yet on this instrument as I'd like but "what the heck." I'll post these tunes as I get better at them. I had fun with this one but I'll admit it was done with multiple takes. I still didn't record exactly what I wanted. I'll have to be satisfied with the energy of the cut rather than perfection...oh well.

First appearing on Sgt. Peppers album, this song featured all Indian musicians playing traditional Indian instruments. The idea to do this as an instrumental came to me one day while bowing my banjo. The sound reminded me of the Dilruba used to state the opening phrase on the original recording. I played everything except the tablas and percussion. The bowed banjo is doubled by the violin and bass in certain sections. The banjo is my Chuck Lee Chautauqua.
