I can't remember if it was 79 or 80,but I was living in Providence R.I. and visiting The Music Emporium trying out their Stelling Gospel model with the cross on the resonator. I remember the price 1400. I was so broke then, but it was fun to play it. Anyway, I looked through their store brochure and saw Bela Fleck as a teacher there. I'd just heard of him and how great he already was. I half jokingly asked them if I could get a lesson from him and they said how he was booked full for the next three months. So I asked would it be possible three months down the road and they said OK . Three months later I'm back on time and everything. They said he was in one of the rooms on the 2nd floor so I went up and introduced myself. I said I wanted my playing to flow along better and he first told me to play something I knew so he could tell where I was. So I did and then I asked if he would teach me Dixie Hoedown. He wrote Dixie Hoedown into tab in no time with his banjo leaning up beside him . He tapped the fingerboard a very few times to check a note. He handed the tab to me and asked me to play it which I did slowly.(1st take on this recording)

A tune played by the local fiddllers. I play it in A out of G tuning;it works out pretty easy.

One of the Oak publication books in the 70's. It's here somewhere. When I work from tab I don't try to play it exactly as written, just what's comfortable for me.

I once read this was a morphine/beer mixture for battlefield first aid during the Civil War. Is this true?
