Just a bunch of noodling on the newly-Zeppified Deering Goodtime. I thought I had pressed STOP before I coughed. Sorry.

An example of how a banjo tune can be transposed and changed in speed for learning purposes. This example was 2.5 whole steps below standard G tuning (must have been a minstrel banjo); before and after going to standard G at 50% speed for learning.

Here's how to create a continuos loop of the fiddle part of any tune in Dan's book. Speed it up or slow it down to fit your taste. A great learning tool.

I deliberately put the mic in front of Bob's fiddle, so you can barely hear my banjo. Mostly the recording is to help me learn the songs he plays.

Whoa! I made a podcast. Here I describe how useful Banjohangout is and mention Polderbits and The Amazing Slow Downer. A look at my learning process on Chinquipin Hunting.

Again, after two days with the Ramsey fretless. I didn't have the courage to attempt the high part. Also, this is a G/A tune, I think. But I do it here in D.

This is my first attempt at playing Bob's new version from the Old Time Banjo Festival CD. He plays it really simply, but trying to play it that way reveals what a master he is--there's a lot going on in that tune, most of it very subtle, and I actually capture very little of it here.

This is me working out Liza Jane; I've never played the tune, and this is a brand new tuning for me. A recent post or blog here encouraged folks to post things they are working on, not stuff that it polished. Well, this is far from polished! Plus you get to hear how I get to practice--with interruptions from kids!

Here's a tune we learned from Jackie. I looped Dan's fiddle part to drill it into my head and work out my banjo part. I'm still not in love with this, and I can't play all the notes in my head, but I do make use of the new drop thumb stuff I can do here. It's coming along. Oh yeah--this is the new Enoch Tradesman w/ Fiberskyn head.

This is a fragment--just want to document where I am here at the beginning. I couldn't remember the exact name of the 2nd tune... thanks everybody!

Here's a first stab at Tommy Jarrel's version of John Henry; learned it from 3 sources: Tommy's fretted version on Come and Go With Me, Tommy playing Paul Brown's fretless in Lomax's Appalachian Journey, and Bob Carlin's Round Peak DVD where he breaks it down real nice.

Here's another short medly where I couldn't remember the name of the 2nd tune--thanks Lyndsay! I also tried something different with the recording. Two mics: one on the banjo, the other is PZM across the room (2 track stereo converted to mono).

Just strung up the Ramsey with Nylgut strings for a change of pace. That poor banjo--it's had 3 different heads and 3 different sets of strings since I got it 2 months ago!

First is Odell Thompson, the second is from Walt Koken. Butcher them both, but I like posting tunes when they're rough for future reference. Yes, I say "Ouch!" at the end, but not because anything hurt...

This is kinda fun. When Bob started playing this, I heard the ghost of Riley Puckett whispering in my ear; I put down the banjo, and this came out, along with the 6-5-2-1 turnaround. I sampled some turntable noise from my keyboard and made it sound like a 78.

This is a tune we used to play with the Frenzies. Sounds a little odd without the fiddle. There's a short verse:

This is after two days with the fretless. A pretty good start, but I really need to work on intonation and getting to know the instrument. Also, I play this tune really crooked--I love to shave off half a measure during the second time through the B part. What do you think?
