This is about 6 minutes of my lesson; we're working on Chinquipin Hunting, and he is really getting some of his major points across to me. Great lesson. (Recorded with my nifty H2).

Again, just a fragment to document skill level in Jan 2007. I'm playing around with the best way to record these snips. This is the pony banjo.

Another fretless work in progress. This one needs some work. I've always loved this simple tune, and I thought of Reed Martin, Walt Koken, and Mary Cox when I played it (that doesn't mean I played it well enough to pay tribute to them!). Open C tuning--I call it the "Uncle Dave" tuning!

Found this from about a month ago when I first got the banjo out of the case. Recorded on 11/2006--this is what was left of my clawhammer playing after a few years of neglect.

I've never posted a vocal here before; I like to sing, even though I am not very good at it. Before the kids went to bed last night I started playing

Me playing an Uncle Dave Macon tune before a Frenzy Brothers gig on Tim Nault's banjo. Walker Tavern, July 1994.

I had a quick 5 minutes to record this; been trying to do more drop thumb, and was working on Carlin's version of this tune. Made it my own after trying to sound like Walt Koken for a while.

This was the way the Saga SS-10P sounded out of the box; the setup isn't right for me, and this is a poor recording through the computer mic.

This was a transition tune for me in more ways than one. When Timmy left the band, I got drafted on banjo, and this is one of the first I started playing banjo on. I used to begin this tune on tinwhistle and end it on bass. Here I switch to banjo, and I'm late coming in!

The Frenzies had this Greatful Dead bluegrass thing going that wasn't exactly my thing, but this was fun to play. Timmy had a great time with this tune, and everytime somebody added that "Aw, that's bad!" part we'd all tear up.

The Frenzy Bros. circa 1995 doing one of my favorite Uncle Dave Macon tunes. Timmy on banjo. Yeah, the "knock, knock" on the side of my bass is pretty hambone, but it's all fun...

My first bona fide banjo tune, just after Tim left the band. I cringe to hear it now, but I did just fine for a bass player, I'd say. ca. 1996.

At Craig's kind request, here's the entire tune with Timmy Nault on banjo. That's me on bass circa 1995.

This was recorded on the H2 out of the box in the mp3 224kbps mode. The tune is John Henry. The banjo ain't tuned to standard pitch.
